Otto and Bertha Smith was responsisble for building the largest portion of Poughkeepsie. In its day, it had a strip mall appearance, consisting of a gas station(exxon), pool hall, auto service, feed and general store. It had everything from medicine to tractor parts, and from hardware, to car parts, including clothing and shoes. It had a walk in deep freeze that people would pay to store game during the season. At one time there was also a movie theater in the town. Coy Nichols ran a small general store that was the only competition to Smith's general store. Poughkeepsie was also among the first in northern Arkansas to be strung for electricity, coming from Springfield, Mo.. The town had promising prospects until the depression hit. People moved to find work and the ones that stayed struggled to make it. Eventually credit and humanity took its toll. They didn't have credit cards, so it was up to the store owner and the consumer to negotiate payments. so many never paid but, unlike today the human heart couldn't neglect the needy. There is something to be noticed in the small town society that is overlooked in the big city hussle.Mrbent2u (talk) 19:03, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
