Were the aims of the attack both directed against LGBT people and as retaliation to the killing of Abu Waheeb?

    [edit]

An ISIL propaganda video states that the motives of the attack were both rooted in anti lgbtq sentiment AND as retaliation to the killing of Abu Waheeb. TheLibyanGuy (talk) 15:59, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

An ISIL propaganda video fails to hack it as a reliable source. It is unlikely that they had ever heard of him before the shooting. Mateen may have been homophobic, but by the time of Noor Salman's trial in 2018, the FBI had dropped the theory that Pulse had been targeted because it was a gay night club. Evidence from Mateen's cell phone suggested that he had considered other targets such as Eve, a non-gay nightclub in downtown Orlando, because it turned up in a web search. Mateen had Googled "downtown Orlando nightclubs" at around 1 a.m. but investigators could find no evidence that he specifically wanted to attack a gay nightclub. Mateen's phone also showed that he had never been to Pulse before the shooting.[1]--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 16:35, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
