Santiago Fernandez-Febles was born February 10, 1966 in Havana Cuba. Son of Dr. Berta Febles-Palacios and Dr. Santiago Fernandez-Oviedo.

Santiago's career started at a very young age. He was accepted into EIDE Martires de Barbado, a school for athletes, from 1978 to 1980. During his studies at EIDE, he participated in several National Competitions earning first place medals.

In 1981 he was accepted into ESPA Nacional, a graduate school for young athletes. During his time in ESPA Nacional, Santiago Fernandez-Febles took part in several Pan American and National Competitions earning numerous medals.

Upon graduation from ESPA Nacional, he was accepted into the Cuban National Rowing Team, earning countless medals in doubles, cuadruples and eight men crew. Santiago Fernandez-Febles graduated from Instituto Superior de Cultura Fisica, Manuel Fajardo, in Havana Cuba in 1987, where he earned his degree.

After retirement, he accepted the position of Trainer for the Cuban National Women's Rowing Team. He defected to the United States during a European Exhibition in 2001, where he now resides.
