Birthplace

[edit]

Until some one can work his birth place in to the main article cleanly (as required by the style manual), I'm removing his birth place. He was born in Pedreña, Cantabria. Trevor1 05:17, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Failed GA

[edit]

This article has a long way to reach GA, I'm afraid

  • The most glaring problem is that the article is very short. It is 5.3k, and the subject of the article has won five majors, 90 tournaments and is one of the most decorated players of his era. His major victories and notable performances should be described in detail so that we know how the victory came to be.
  • Article lacks information on playing style, strenghts and weaknesses. Things like putting, driving, sand bunkers and so forth.
  • The article is not chronologically logical and mentions many events out of order and and a haphazard manner without elaborating on teh background and significance.
  • The divorce sentence is merged into a gold sentence and is out of place.
  • Too much recentist slant even though he has not been playing recently, focusing on random tournaments that he played in a once-off.
  • "binging down the curtain on an illustrious career" hyperbole
  • Should this article be put at Seve Ballasteros
  • Self sources from his website should not be used. Suerly the family info can be found from a biography, which should exist for such an illustirious player.  Done Grovermj 07:37, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Common name

[edit]

Shouldn't the article be located at "Seve Ballesteros", since that is his common name? - Dudesleeper / Talk 00:42, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's not his real name though. CFountain (talk) 14:58, 31 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Page move

[edit]

I propose to move this page to Seve Ballesteros over the redirect. The manual of style for biographies, Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies)#Names, states:

"While the article title should generally be the name by which the subject is most commonly known, the subject's full name should be given in the lead paragraph, if known."

He is commonly known as "Seve" not "Severiano". As evidence:

  1. a English language google search on "golf" and "Seve Ballesteros" yield 114,000 hits, "golf" and "Severiano Ballesteros" yields 21,300 hits - a 5 to 1 ratio
  2. the European Tour's site [1] uses "Seve"
  3. the PGA Tour's site [2] uses "Seve"
  4. the Official World Golf Rankings uses "Seve" now [3] and in the past, e.g. [4]
  5. the World Golf Hall of Fame's site [5] uses "Seve"

Unless serious objections are made, I'll move the page (or request its move if I can't) in a couple of days. Tewapack (talk) 01:41, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I see above that there were "no objections" a year or so back when this article was moved from Severiano Ballesteros (his name) to its present title (a nickname which, okay, has come into wider use in recent years). I don't see the reasoning behind the move and I'd like to know what other people think before I attempt to move it back. Deb (talk) 13:44, 7 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This is a case like that of Bill Clinton and Tony Blair. Biography articles are usually named after what the subject is most commonly known as. 188.29.156.101 (talk) 13:54, 7 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but is Severiano Ballesteros more commonly known as "Seve" (or "Sevvy" as some people spell it)? I am not sure he is - that's the whole point. In his early years in the game, he was rarely called by the shortened form; it's just a convention that's grown up over the years and I don't think it's right to use it here. By moving this suggestion from the bottom of the page, you have also distracted attention from my attempt to start a new debate. Deb (talk) 07:45, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In my first post, I listed five points that support "Seve" as the name he is commonly known by (I've corrected links to pages that have moved). Per WP:COMMONNAME, "Seve Ballesteros" should remain the page's name. Tewapack (talk) 14:32, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Deb certainly has a point: he was usually known as 'Severiano' in the early years. It was often mispronounced 'SevEriano', which may be one reason why the shorter form became increasingly common. Rothorpe (talk) 14:36, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In recent years, the large majority of media coverage refers to him as Seve. I believe the article title should be what he is best known as now, per COMMONNAME. 188.29.19.138 (talk) 10:03, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ryder Cup points/wins - Number of victories on the European Tour

[edit]

The article now states he had 20 points out of 37 matches. This is not correct. He had 20 wins. With his 5 draws, this means he scored 22 1/2 points.

A more important thing that ought to be discussed: Last year a big deal was made (at least several pages were edited with the 2009 numbers as reference) of the point that the official pages of the European Tour put him up with 50 victories on the Tour. This year they are back at 48. His list no longer includes the two Masters, and the -76 Lancome is back in. Has it been discussed anywhere if Wiki should go back to the now reverted European Tour 2010 numbers? Paaln (talk) 17:59, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Corrected the Ryder Cup points. In the 2010 European Tour Official (Media) Guide (available here), he is still listed with 50 wins. My guess is that in the recent redesign of the ET web site the wins were inadvertently dropped. - Tewapack (talk) 19:34, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Socks

[edit]

Is it true that Seve always wore the same left sock every PGA he ever played? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.141.2.190 (talk) 20:41, 20 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reported death

[edit]

Has his death been confirmed? All I have read is a "severe deterioration".

No....see http://www.joe.ie/sports/golf/justin-rose-incorrectly-tweets-seve-ballesteros-death-0012030-1 21:49, 6 May 2011 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nicholsr (talkcontribs)

any chance of a decent picture

[edit]

of this guy.. or maybe something from Michangelo CorvetteZ51 (talk) 10:44, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That is a really good question. I am in the process (or was, really) of writing some organisations about maybe donating pics, using the upload wizard at commons. I stopped, because I don't know enough about licenses and stuff and legal and commercial implications for the owners of the pictures. The thought was that I should ask both Seve's own foundation, maybe some of the sports photo agencies, J. Cannon... even their bottom-of-the-barrel-no-income-pics are better than the one-1! we have. I didn't even use that one in the Norwegian article, no pic at all is better than that, but someone put it in after the death news. So the idea is out there, I just chickened out... Error in listings for European tour wins

[edit]

The section on European Tour Wins contains at least two errors. The section states that Ballesteros won the Masters in 1980 and 1983. This is FALSE information. The Masters Tournament is NOT part of the European Tour. The information needs to be deleted. Anthony22 (talk) 00:57, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It is part of the ET now and past major wins are now retroactively counted as wins by the ET. Tewapack (talk) 02:45, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Copa Quinto Centenario por Equipos

[edit]

In 1992 Seve played in a minor event in Argentina, often now called "Copa Quinto Centenario por Equipos". Quinto Centenario means Quincentenary (ie 500th anniversary), since it was to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Columbus's landing in 1492. Translating it as "fifth centenary" gives the impression that it was the 5th edition of the event, when it was just a one-off. Actually it is barely worthy of noting as a win - two Spaniards playing two Argentinans. From The Guardian 5 March 1992 "Ballesteros's South American interlude, after his extra-time victory in the Desert Classic in Dubai, was to celebrate the quincentenary of the discovery of the New World by Columbus. With Miguel Martin he defeated Argentina, represented by Eduardo Romero and Vicente Fernandez, in both fourball and medal play." Nigej (talk) 15:42, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
