Here are some questions I was hoping this article would answer:

  • Can I expect to be able to rent a gun at the shooting range?
  • Do I need to have some kind of license?
  • Do I need to take some kind of classes?

Obviously, the answers are going to vary widely depending on the shooting range and the country, but any information would be valuable. Pissant 18:00, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

As you say, the answers to these questions will vary widely depending on where you are. I don't think we'll find a concise summary for the encyclopedia entry.
If it will help, I wrote about four locations near Harrodsburg, Kentucky on your talk page. -- Mike Wilson 01:10, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Have re-written this article to address many of these questions. Regards. 12 January 2006 (UTC)
Have cleaned up the POV of this article to NPOV, and re-structured it. Also added external links. Yaf 06:42, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Wow. You guys have added a lot. My only comment is that the ranges I go to are more informal than what is expressed here, but I generally shoot in a rural area. I am surprised when my local range has more than a few people. -- Mike Wilson 20:34, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Have attempted a fix relative to global issues identified earlier today, moving the US-centric information to a new article that is linked from here. In essence, I have attempted to fix this article following much the same format as used in Gun politics. Now, we need to get authors for the various countries! The article refers to concealed carry licenses in 'some countries'. Are there any other countries where 'concealed carry' is a kind of license? DJ Clayworth 21:28, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I looked and looked, but didn't find examples of any such licenses in other countries for civilians (although some do have comparable licenses for security personnel.) So, I changed the wording to be just in the US. If later it is found that such a license does exist outside the US, somewhere, then we can always change it back. Yaf 15:20, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Concealed carry liscences exist and are relatively freely issued in Switzerland, Israel and the Baltic states. In Germany and Italy, there are about 20,000-30,000 currently valid concealed carry liscences, mostly to politically-connected businessmen (especially those running high-cash businesses, such as jewelers). Canada has concealed carry liscences as well, but there are only about 50 issued in the whole country. User:Spock 12:43, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge

[edit]

Agree I think that Rifle range would be much better as part of the Shooting range article. Arthur 18:59, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I also think it would be a good idea. Further, there is another kind of shooting range that could be briefly mentionned: all the proof house ranges, those of the militaries, police and of the arms/ammo manufacturers. They are generally very well equipped, not for pratice but for various R&D and compliance testings.

Agree. Shooting range is more generic term, article need to be one to afford comparison between types of ranges and cut down on duplication. — Deon Steyn (talk) 12:43, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done Content of "Rifle range" added here and page redirected. I suggest we trim down certain sections of the new rifle range content, specifically wind flags which might be more appropriate (if not already duplicated) on another page on shooting, but that's another matter. — Deon Steyn (talk) 13:42, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, well done:-) I put in the pipe to describe the proof-house ranges, police ranges, they are part of it. --M Deby (talk) 13:46, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Common safety practices

[edit]

"Typically, all public ranges require that all guns be unloaded and variously securely encased and/or trigger-locked prior to entering, or leaving, the range facility, irrespective of whether one holds a concealed carry license in jurisdictions where concealed carry is legal."

I've never been to a range where this is policy. In fact, most ranges welcome concealed and open carry. Any source, citation? In the mean time I'll change it to "Some ranges..." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.88.89.117 (talk) 22:53, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lead poisoning

[edit]

In the interest of comprehensiveness, it would be good if this article covered the topic of lead poisoning at gun ranges, and efforts to clean it up. (For example: [1][2][3][4]) Thank you. Praemonitus (talk) 15:12, 7 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
