Use of apostrophe

[edit]

Yes, the addition of the apostrophe to the title in recent days makes it match the spelling of the Ethiopian government, but they're the only ones who use the apostrophe. It doesn't make logical or grammatical sense in English because "Peoples" is plural in this sense. Thoughts from Ethiopia experts? Badagnani 09:10, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The proper English plural possessive of "people" is "peoples'". (Apostrophe after the "s".) -- llywrch 20:56, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it should be possessive in this case. Badagnani 02:36, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think that we should be focussing more on the fiancial aspects of the southern nations rather the geography. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.167.231.27 (talkcontribs)
I disagree getting the name right is important. This incorrect name has now proliferated it self through out the internet because of this article. I propose moving this page to Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' Region. That is NO COMMA and with apostrophe after the peoples as used by the census documents from the Ethiopian government. አቤል ዳዊት (Janweh) (talk) 10:17, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The second comma is a serial comma, which is preferred usage by some people in various contexts. Since I was asked for my opinion, I'd say in this context it is a matter of taste & I can't find any reason to strongly want it either way. The deciding argument would be either to match the style of the FDRE (if that is a conscious & consistent practice -- English is not a native or official language there) or what makes the most people happy. (As for the possessive form, my earlier comments were to point out what is proper English usage -- which even most native English speakers do not observe.) -- llywrch (talk) 17:08, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I did this search of the Central Statistical Agency which publishes the most English language official documents. They consistently use no comma and less consistent prefer the form with apostrophe at the end. It seams they have completely abandon the form with People's. They most often use Peoples' or sometimes omit the apostrophe. አቤል ዳዊት (Janweh) (talk) 04:49, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"Reform city"

[edit]

What is a "reform city," as mentioned at the Hoseina article? Badagnani (talk) 04:37, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
