Namesake of?

Obvious question is who the ship was named for. I did find a Stephen Whitney (1776–1860) as a likely candidate. New York merchant who made a fortune shipping cotton after the War of 1812 etc. See whitney website page but would prefer an independent source. W Nowicki (talk) 21:38, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
