[edit]How is this etymology? Is it not merely a naming issue? 81.68.255.36 (talk) 11:37, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
Move Page to Terminology of the Vietnam War?
[edit]"Etymology" is the study of the origins and history of the meaning of words, so I propose moving the page to "Terminology of the Vietnam War." There is only one link to this page, Vietnam War#etymology which I will adjust. ch (talk) 17:49, 6 August 2011 (UTC)
The name in Vietnam and should this page exist.
[edit]Based on talk page of Vietnam War and the contents of this page, this page appears to reflect an opinion based on misunderstanding the style of most English Vietnamese dictionaries. Namely, these dictionaries translate word for word, they do not provide the words normally used by Vietnamese.
Arguments to what it is called by overseas Vietnamese do not help either, as that depends on which overseas Vietnamese you talk to.
I see no point in this page, in the English wiki. It is sufficient, I think that the Vietnam War page says the people of Vietnam call the war The American War.RayTayMiht (talk) 08:26, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
- I disagree. The Vietnam War was just a part of the larger Second Indochinese War(s) to be precise (in both a geographical way and from a time-line perspective). In the USA, the Vietnam war primarily means USAs engagement in the conflict there. In France the Vietnam War also means the French engagement prior to that. To scholars it might mean all of that (and sometimes more). As Wikipedia is an international project, that just happens to use the English language (British English btw!), it is necessary to reflect and explain these various meanings. I even think this article - and many of the articles on the so called "Vietnam War" - should be improved in this respect. RhinoMind (talk) 02:44, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
About the name "The American War"
[edit]It's totaly true that Vietnamese call it "Resistance War Against America" (Kháng chiến chống Mỹ) or more formally "Resistance War Against America to save the Nation" (Kháng chiến chống Mỹ cứu nước), but the translation as "American War" (Chiến tranh Mỹ in Vietnamese) need to be examined further because I have never seen anyone in Vietnam calls it like that. The Vietnamese Wikipedia also didn't mention this name, https://vi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chi%E1%BA%BFn_tranh_Vi%E1%BB%87t_Nam#T.C3.AAn_g.E1.BB.8Di. Quych (talk) 14:13, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
- Hi. great input. I am not sure, but I think this might just be a slip in translation? Or someone being too casual about the wording? Whatever the reason, I think your info needs to be explained in the article (and elsewhere), even if English sources might use the wrong translation "The American War". RhinoMind (talk) 03:20, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- I have inserted a "citation needed"-tag for a start. RhinoMind (talk) 03:29, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
- Ah, saw you have made edits already. I have moved the "Chiến tranh Mỹ" to the Vietnam War section. I think its alright now? On this page... RhinoMind (talk) 03:36, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
