The posessive of Rolls is Rolls's for anyone correcting in future --Ithundir (talk) 01:04, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is coming along nicely, as befits Monmouthshire's most important country house. Is it correct to describe the gardens as an example of Edwardian design? I would have thought the dates of the main expansions of the house meant it could be more accurately be described as Victorian. Describing their development as occuring "towards the end of the 19th century" would suggest this. Views? KJP1 (talk) 20:49, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that sounds more accurate, the gardens were being developed constantly from the start of the acquisition of the house by the Rolls family but the important changes were during the end of the 19th century. I'll have a dig around for more info when I get the chance. --Ithundir (talk) 22:13, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There doesn't seem to be a lot of sources cited for this article, I think it would be in good interest for the article and for the project to keep it as sourced as possible 18:47, 8 August 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Prettyxvacant (talkcontribs)

Sources are tricky as it's not written about that much. All the family history information is from my own family tree and archives... --Ithundir (talk) 21:45, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As we both know only too well, the lack of sources is a problem, but its a fair point. I could have sourced some of the material I've added. Will get onto it when I have a moment. KJP1 (talk) 12:17, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Review

[edit]
  • Referencing and citation: requires far more citations.
  • Coverage and accuracy: Good coverage of the article, though it requires more modern information such as who looks after the property now and its listed status
  • Structure: On the whole very good, though I'm unsure of the aviation interests of the family under the 'History of the manison' section.
  • Grammar and style: criterion met
  • Supporting materials: There must be more out there on such an important building, but if there was one book I would recommend it would be J Newman's architecture series, so it's good to see it referenced.

C class article. FruitMonkey (talk) 10:47, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

History of the family

[edit]

In my view, this article should be about the building and the estate, not the family. There are now several articles on members of the Rolls family, and most if not all of the material on the family should be in those articles, with a few appropriate links from here, but no more. The early history of the family should go, as an ancestry section, in the article about the first family member to be sufficiently notable to have their own article, currently John Etherington Welch Rolls - although there may well be a case for earlier family members to have articles. Any thoughts? Ghmyrtle (talk) 21:18, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. There is no mention at all as to who built the original house, or who lived in it before the Rolls family. It's not an old house (comparatively) and I'm sure that information is available. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 22:55, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The wealth came from James James. Do we know anything else of him? Llywelyn2000 (talk) 05:43, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've now started a new article on the Rolls Family which you can find here. As soon as you've corrected it, let me know and I'll transfer it from my user page. Then we'll amend the Hendre article. Let me know of any changes you need - or get it done yourselves! That should allow us to keep the Rolls family tree ! Llywelyn2000 (talk) 09:11, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well good things come from ...It looks like a good article and shows who is who in one place. Without this it would nt be clear where the powerful Rolls family got their money.... I heard gossip that the Rolls family also sold land in London and rented it out getting a million a year - no source at all but Im guessing there is a story behind this Victuallers (talk) 09:59, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good. It would be useful to find out how James James acquired his estates in Surrey, as that seems to be the origins of the family's wealth. Ghmyrtle (talk) 10:56, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to both of you. I'll wait a couple of days just in case others may object. Victuallers: where on earth do you hear such gossip? Scandalous! Llywelyn2000 (talk) 03:31, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Name

[edit]

The Welsh word for Winter is Gaeaf. To the best my knowledge the name Hende derives from the two Welsh words hen (= old) + dre (mutated by the adjective from tre = farmstead, also the root of tref). I realise that Welsh toponymy just says "winter farmstead". A possible source might be this. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:40, 7 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
