misleading claim about book's relation to climate change[edit]

The article claims that it is "one of the earliest books to warn about the possible dangers of climate change." This seems highly misleading, however. What Ardrey writes in the book (p.197) is this:

"I think, for example, of a position being taken by certain reputable scientists that can conceivably be founded on nothing but fashionable contemporary thought. There are those who publish their views that the industrial pollution of our atmosphere plays a significant role. The argument makes no sense to me. The increased burning of fossil fuels contributes carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, resulting in what is known as "the greenhouse effect." Were the rise significant on a global scale (which it is not) we should have a rise, not fall, in world temperatures, leading perhaps to a melting of the ice caps...However fashionable blaming industry may be in our time, I find the argument wanting. wanting. I far prefer the consensus of the Brown meeting: we suffered climatic crashes long before smokestacks, and whatever may be industry's many splendored sins, what happened to the Norse in the thirteenth century cannot have been somebody's fault."

Indeed, the "climate change" that Ardrey seems most concerned with is a new Ice Age, not global warming. 24.207.18.240 (talk) 22:28, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
