Earl of Northumberland succession box

[edit]

Currently the succession box on this page for the Earl of Northumberland has in the preceding "new creation". I do not think that this is a) technically correct b) fits in with the rest of the article. As the title of the article notes, Thomas Percy is generally refered to as the 7th Earl of Northumberland. This number specifically relates to the creation of 1377 (ignoring earlier Saxon earls for instance and the 1464 creation for John Neville). This reflects the fact that the title was not seen as a new creation, but that Thomas Percy was awarded the title as a direct decedent and heir general of Henry Percy, 1st Earl of Northumberland. While it is true there was a considerable gap between the death of his uncle Henry Percy, 6th Earl of Northumberland and his becoming Earl himself this was not unparalleled and his Uncle's article's succession box lists Thomas as his successor as Earl of Northumberland. Indeed the Earl of Northumberland article lists both as succeeding and does not even class this as a recreation of the title, grouping both in the section Earls of Northumberland (1416, cont.). Thus I think the succession box should be modified even if it is to say - "Vacant (Last held by Henry Percy)". Dunarc (talk) 18:34, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
