Kvern house, Northern Idaho

[edit]

I grew up in a house designed by Violeta Autumn. She was a friend of my parents, Stanley and Cordelia Kvern. I had always assumed that they met at Pacific Lutheran University, in Tacoma, Washington, but I'm now not sure that's correct. Two trees went through the roof of the house--part of the plan was to leave trees where they were, and to build the house around them. They were outside, on either side of a long hallway with holes in the very deep eaves of the roof were designed to accommodate them. Autumn also designed and silkscreen printed various graphics that were part of the house design--similar to the graphics seen in the windows of the Cliff House.

My parents were rural school teachers, and banks of the time/place were not interested in funding the construction of such a "weird" house. Our house was never really finished. I have vivid memories of the interior of the Cliff House from a visit when I was six or seven years old. I also remember meeting their son (Keller?) on a visit to my grandparents' house in Richmond.

The house was sold years ago, and the new owners promptly cut down the trees that ran through the roof and removed the huge angled windows that were part of what made it special. It's sad to see it now.
