Multiple associations

[edit]

Just to complicate matters further, the seat had two Conservative Associations between 1918 and 1924 - they did not merge with the seats themselves. In 1921 Erskine was the nominee of the Hannover Square Conservative Assocation (and also the Anti-Waste League) against an official nominee, and he held it in 1922 against another (a former Chief Whip), before being adopted as an official (unopposed) candidate in 1923 and the associations amalgamated in 1924.

There's a chapter on the 1931 by-election (bizarrely a referendum on the Leader of the Opposition!) in a book on my shelf so I'll add some details later. Timrollpickering 13:11, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal to split

[edit]

Regarding FYS proposal to split. I'm afraid I'm still going to sit on the fence on this at the moment as I can see the merits of both keeping the existing article and of dividing it in 1918. I am though a little surprised that FYS did not bring this to the discussion page first before proposing the split, especially considering the disagreements last time over this article. I would suggest that FYS starts any new discussion first here: WikiProject UK Parliament constituencies as this was the site of the last discussion and will give people who are unfamiliar with the arguments a chance to review them.
