Name of article

[edit]

If he is "usually known" by his bardic name, why isn't the article at that title? PamD (talk) 07:57, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Because it wasn't his real name. See Wikipedia:Naming conventions for further info. Deb (talk) 09:33, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There are articles at George Orwell and Lewis Carroll, and I don't see where in WP:NC it says to prefer real over other names. It just says "Generally, article naming should prefer what the greatest number of English speakers would most easily recognize", so if he's "usually known" as GH then that should be the article name, surely? The greatest number of English speakers probably would know him better as William Rees, if they knew him at all - and they would have difficulty pronouncing and/or spelling "Gwilym Hiraethog". It's among Welsh speakers that his bardic name is more commonly used, because that's the language he wrote in, and more specifically in literary circles - this is a name that he would have used for eisteddfod entries, for example. I think if you look in English-language books for mention of him, you would find both names given side by side. Deb (talk) 12:52, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
