Usage
[edit]- This redirect category (rcat) template populates Category:Redirects from less specific names. Add this rcat to a redirect in the following manner:
#REDIRECT (target page name)

- Template Rcat shell is an alias for the Redirect category shell template, which may be used to add as many appropriate rcats as needed, usually from one to seven, along with their parameters, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation on its template page. This rcat may also tag a redirect individually:
#REDIRECT (target page name)
R from less specific name
- This is in accord with instructions found at Wikipedia:REDCAT.
- Use this rcat to tag all redirects from a title that is a less specific, more general page name.
- Important note: If the redirect situation suggests that we are missing a more general, overarching article than the redirect target's scope, then R with possibilities should also be used to tag the redirect. If the target page of the redirect needs a broader scope, then this issue should be raised on the article's talk page.
When to use a different Rcat template
[edit]- If the redirect is simply a shorter version of the same name, use R from short name instead.
- If the redirect is a completely different name for the same topic, use R from alternative name instead.
- For redirects that are incorrect names for the target, use R from incorrect name.

Printworthiness
[edit]Please do not alter the printworthy settings of any rcat without first notifying the Version 1.0 Editorial Team, who are responsible for any and all materials, including redirects, that go into a printed version of Wikipedia. |
- In main-article namespace, many redirects to more general page titles are considered unprintworthy; however, there are many others that are printworthy, so there is no default sort for printworthiness.
- In 2003, efforts were begun to support the Wikimedia Foundation's goal of increasing access and availability of Wikipedia articles in printed versions. Some rcats automatically populate either Category:Printworthy redirects or Category:Unprintworthy redirects by default. Others, like this rcat, do not, and that means it is up to editors to choose which of those categories, Printworthy or Unprintworthy, is appropriate and should be populated. The rcats that are used separately to populate those categories are:
R printworthy
andR unprintworthy
- Please click on each one for more details and guidance.
- Template Redirect category shell will accept these and any other rcats:

TemplateData
[edit]TemplateData for R from less specific name
Places a redirect in . This template can be added to a redirect which has a name which is a valid alternative to the title of the target page, specifically a more general term for the subject of the article; it may indicate that a broader article needs to be created, or that the scope of the extant article needs to be expanded. There are some more specific alternative name redirect templates which can be used instead of this one, such as R from full name (for individuals) and (for places). Do not use this template if the redirect is an incorrect title for the target page; use R from incorrect name instead. This template takes no parameters.
