Template talk:ISSN-needed

It should be noted that since this template is directed at editors rather than readers it belongs on the talk page. - SimonP 14:52, May 8, 2005 (UTC)

I made an ISBN version here: Template:ISBN-needed (links, talk) Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 22:50, 2005 July 9 (UTC)

You just recreated a template that we recently voted to delete. (There are good reasons against listing ISBNs, not the least of which is that every edition of a book has a unique ISBN.) Psychonaut 00:40, 10 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
If I am not mistaken, this is the Wikipedia, isn't it. Starting to work on the English part of it now as well, I find this dicussion very interesting. Of course every edition of a book as it's own, unique ISBN, which makes it possible to refer to a very specific edition. If a given edition is no longer available, this does not render the ISBN invalid; however, the user would have a choice to research for a later edition. But you really voted against having ISBNs? *shakingheadindisbelief* I personally consider this a bit of a loss of culture as despite any digital evolution, paper based books are still quite importantant. I can only watch and wonder about this development... By the way, the ISSN does not change with every issue of a given magazine, thus it is a unique identifier for that I see no reason to not have it as a template. --Volty 22:03, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
No, I did not vote to delete the ISBN template. In fact, I believe I voted against it. I just wanted to alert CyberSkull to the fact that his version of it was likely to be immediately deleted, as per Wikipedia's policy on recreation of deleted pages, and to summarize the arguments presented for its original deletion. —Psychonaut 00:04, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Offtopic Q

[edit]

Why aren't ISSNs autolinked? Is there no free ISSN database anywhere? If so, why don't we start a list of publications by ISSN, just as we have a list of postal codes which is endorsed by WP:NOT? :) --Unforgettableid | Talk to me 19:32, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Officially, there is a URN scheme issn: which could be used. Then the user could configure their browser to use whatever ISSN database they want when they click on an issn: link. I proposed this as WikiMedia Bug 3133 but the developers decided not to implement it. —Psychonaut 19:57, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Newspaper without ISSN

[edit]

I just tried to find the ISSN for The Hook (newspaper), but it's not in the official database, and as the newspaper is defunct, it's unlikely to appear there in the future. I can remove this tag from the talk, but how I do prevent someone from re-adding it in a future AWB run? {{u|Sdkb}}talk 20:15, 16 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
