About this template

[edit]

I started this template, obviously, as a navigation template (using {{Navbox}}) for articles relating to Peak oil. Things to do:

  • Determine the most suitable WikiProject for the template (probably Wikipedia:WikiProject Energy).
  • Determine suitable categories for the template itself (the template does not automatically categorize articles that transclude it, nor should it, in my opinion).
  • Write a documentation subpage (which need not be fancy, since the template usage is obvious).

Now the category has moved to: Category:Natural science and nature navigation templates. --Teratornis (talk) 17:39, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The 2006 film Who Killed the Electric Car? does not refer to peak oil, much like OPEC, but it is closely related to a number of peak oil issues. Should it be listed? - Shiftchange (talk) 21:05, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestion. See {{Energy templates}}, Category:Energy templates, and User:Teratornis/Energy. I'm trying to organize links to some of the many energy-related articles on navigation templates. We already have a number of energy-related navigation templates, and we need some more. In general, when someone starts a navigation template, they arbitrarily select one or more categories, and use the template to represent some of the articles in those categories. At the moment, Who Killed the Electric Car? is not in Category:Peak oil nor in a subcategory. A film about electric cars is not a Peak oil topic per se, especially if the film does not mention peak oil, but electric cars are certainly a strategy for the Mitigation of peak oil. However, peak oil mitigation strategies encompass just about everything in Renewable energy and Energy conservation, and the Global warming camp promotes many of the same strategies (just about everything which doesn't involve putting more fossil carbon into the atmosphere). A navigation template would get very large if it linked to every peak oil mitigation strategy. So, I would say Who Killed the Electric Car? doesn't belong on {{Peak oil}}, based on its lack of explicit mention of peak oil, but we could certainly start another navigation template specifically about energy-related films (and possibly energy-related books). There are many such films, variously approaching the energy problem from the standpoints of peak oil, global warming, or energy security. --Teratornis (talk) 01:22, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd consider OPEC more directly related to peak oil, because OPEC accounts for such a large fraction of the international oil trade, and an even larger fraction of the world's (allegedly) proven reserves. Present and former OPEC officials have explicitly commented on peak oil, and OPEC hosts international meetings to discuss the global allocation of oil supplies. OPEC is clearly a player on the subject of peak oil. Also, it's easier to fit a four-letter acronym than a five-word film title on the {{Peak oil}} template. --Teratornis (talk) 01:27, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I created {{Energy films}}. Please add any additional energy-related film articles you find. --Teratornis (talk) 04:45, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's best to link only to articles which exist on Wikipedia, not to red links, and not to external sites. See WP:LIST and Wikipedia:Categories, lists, and navigation templates. --Teratornis (talk) 07:49, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just found this template, and noticed the offending link. I've removed it. ~ Amory (usertalkcontribs) 14:36, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I nominate Jean Laherrère who seems to have made quite a contribution, albeit mostly in French.--DadaNeem (talk) 20:52, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
