Clarification

[edit]

I just changed this template to list Sue Burns as the most recent "owner" but now that I'm looking at it, I see Peter Magowan was listed previously, when it seems it was her husband, Buzz Burns. The "managing general partner", which Magowan was, and which is now William Neukom, is not necessarily the same as the principal owner. Anyone know where this is covered for such templates?  Frank  |  talk  02:18, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

For the purposes of these navboxes, consensus seems to be that the "principal owner" of a club is the person recognized as such by MLB and the person that represents the team at MLB owners meetings. This included a person who may not be a majority owner, but is the head of an ownership "group" (i.e., like the Monfort brothers in Colorado before they recently bought most of the other shareholders). To my understanding, Magowan met and Neukom meets this definition. For aother example Hal Steinbrenner is not the majority owner of the Yankees (his father, George, still is), but Hal was recognized by MLB after the 2008 season as the "owner" of the team, as George stepped away from active ownership. This would seem to make Hal the principal owner of the Yankees as he serves in the capicity within the organization and within MLB. So, I would support replacing Neukom into the navbox. Just my thoughts, but it would be an interesting discussion for WP:Baseball if you choose to take it there. - Masonpatriot (talk) 02:39, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
