Substing

[edit]

I think all instances of this template should be substed as it contains a category which when using an automated browser or a bot doe not appear as it is inside of the non substed template. If no one replys here I may start substing them soon. ·Ãḍď§ђɸŗЄ· Talk 21:36, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In fact after re thinking this substing would not be logical. Instead I propose that the category be removed from the template and manually added to each page. ·Ãḍď§ђɸŗЄ· Talk 21:45, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean [[Category:{{{this year}}} in baseball|*]]? If you want to go through each page and add the appropriate cat individually, I don't think I'd have a problem with that; just remember to format it with the |* on each page. MisfitToys (talk) 23:13, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes that is what I mean. I think I will go through and add the cat as the way it is currently done doesn't work out 100% ·Ãḍď§ђɸŗЄ· Talk 05:50, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think I understand Addshore's proposition, and the reasoning behind it. If the same category is listed twice on a page, the sort order can be erratic if they both don't have the same key. I agree with MisfitToys that as long as the explicit cats on each page are keyed |*, then there is no problem with getting rid of the cat from the template. You may want to include the template in the category with <noinclude> tags. Neier (talk) 14:47, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

suggestion

[edit]

I'd like this template to be oriented across the bottom of the articles instead of along the side. Currently, this template makes it impossible to put images into Year in baseball articles. Kingturtle (talk) 04:25, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Concur. Navboxes are all the rage now, and have depreciated the use of sideways boxes, which are usually reserved for infoboxes nowadays. This is not an infobox template - it is a navigational template, so it should be a {{navbox}}. Rgrds. --Tombstone (talk) 12:44, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm. I took a shot at it but I must have made a few slight syntax errors, because it didn't work correctly. Can someone take my edit and tweak it so it works properly? I did all the hard data entry parts? Once the box is converted, I'll be happy to switch the positioning of the boxes in all the related articles. Kingturtle (talk) 18:00, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is this what you wanted:
I added a width parameter which can be removed if you want it to default to the normal width. Note, there is going to be one small problem with the way it is. The current method has the lede sentence as part of the template, then the sidebar. That works fine as a sidebar, but as a footer, the lede sentence needs to be separated out. I would propose creating a new template {{Year in baseball top}} that would include the lede sentence, place that new template at the top of every "XXXX in baseball" article, and this new footer template at the bottom. Thoughts? Rgrds. --Tombstone (talk) 12:56, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah ha! The lede! So there'd be a lede template and a footer template. How do we make the lede? And can we find a bot to visit all the XXXX in baseball and move this template to the bottom and add the lede template? Kingturtle (talk) 14:19, 13 January 2009 (UTC) P.S. Nice work on the chart![reply]
I went ahead a created the top template with the lede. WP:BOTREQ might be able to help. I'm busy for awhile, so if you want to go ahead and fix 'er up then go for it; otherwise I'll mosey back over here in a few days. Rgrds. --Tombstone (talk) 19:57, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Are you back yet? Kingturtle (talk) 14:53, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ack! Meant to do this the other day, but got sidetracked with...well, just forgot. I ran it up the flagpole at Wikipedia:Bot requests/Archive 25#Bot needed to fix Year in Baseball template please. We'll see if anyone salutes. Rgrds. --Tombstone (talk) 15:22, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Are you sure the lede toptemplate works? I tried it out and couldn't get it to work. Kingturtle (talk) 15:27, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You need to specify the variable for {{{this year}}}. So you would need to put, for example, {{Year in baseball top|this year = 1912}} which returns: <see here> Rgrds. --Tombstone (talk) 15:40, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

D'oh! I had to remove the template because it catergorized this talk page. Just click the link I replaced it with to see it work. Rgrds. --Tombstone (talk) 15:46, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I could do this easily. Shall I copy the code over to {{Year in baseball}} and then do the update or change {{Year in baseball}} to {{Year in baseball top}} and then do another run adding the navbox after the code has been copied? (my preference is for the former, fewer edits, less hassle). Regardless I'll get coding and let you know when I file the BRFA. Richard0612 20:24, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just another quick thought: would it be easier to put the navbox in {{Navbox years in baseball}} or something similar to avoid having the articles looking odd in the few minutes while the bot updates them, although this is hardly a major issue. Richard0612 20:47, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for accepting the request! I think the articles can look awkward for a moment if it only takes less than 10 minutes give or take a few minutes. To make it easier, I copied the navbox code onto this template for you, then undid it until you are ready to go. So, when you start, here's what you can do: 1) undo this revision (don't rollback) right before you start, this will turn this template into the navbox; 2) replace {{Year in baseball}} with {{Year in baseball top}} and move {{Year in baseball}} to the bottom of the page above the categories and language links. I think that is what you were hoping for. If we are on the same page, then feel free to proceed. Thanks for the bot assistance, Rgrds. --Tombstone (talk) 14:01, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Wait! At the top of each page is {{Year in baseball | this year = 1945 (or whatever year) | }} and it needs to instead be {{Year in baseball top | this year = 1945 | }}. So you only need to add "top" to the existing code, leaving the "this year =" parameter. Rgrds. --Tombstone (talk) 14:07, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry, the code doesn't mess with any parameters, just the name (see the code here). I've filed the BRFA, it's a simple task so shouldn't take long to approve. Richard0612 17:03, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Great work everyone! Outstanding work! Kingturtle (talk) 12:24, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
