This qualified him as a barrister.[4]

Between 1993 and 1998, he was chief executive of Castrol International and chief executive of Burmah Castrol PLC from 1998 to 2000.[6] He has taken on a number of non-executive director positions: between 1997 and 2004, of the Department for Education and Skills;[3] between 2000 and 2004, of Partnerships UK; and of Tribal Group from 2004 to 2008.[7] He became Chairman of Morgan Crucible in December 2006.[7] In March 2011 he joined Johnson Matthey as chairman designate. His appointment as chairman was confirmed in July 2011.[8] He was succeeded by Patrick Thomas in 2018.[9]
