Most children with ASD can be diagnosed between age 2-3 because of their behaviors and lack of social skills. They can also have gastrointestinal problems, seizures, and sleep disorders.[1]“Nationally, 1 in 59 children had a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by age 8 in 2014, a 15 percent increase over 2012” (Autism Speaks 2018). Looking at statistics, back in 2004 there were only 1 in 166 children with that same diagnosis of ASD. Why have the numbers increased? Is there a specific cause, and if so, what can we do to help treat or prevent it?[2]https://www.autismspeaks.org/science-news/cdc-increases-estimate-autisms-prevalence-15-percent-1-59-children

Many schools and parents have started to use an electronic means of communication, such as an ipad. Others use printed out pictures to enable the child to pick out a picture that represents their want or need. In this way someone can ask, “What do you want?” and the child can hand the adult a picture of a piece of fruit or a cup that represents they would like something to drink. These methods are opening the doors of communication between the parent, teacher and child. [3]

Therapies are very important in helping children who are autistic. One specific therapy is known as Applied Behavioral Analysis, or ABA therapy. This kind of therapy is very intensive and intended for children that are more severe. [4]http://www.actionbehavior.com/many-nonverbal-children-autism-conquer-severe-language-delays-study-finds/

Strategies for children with ASD who are dealing with meltdowns or tantrums include using timers to let the child know when the next transition will happen, using pictures to tell them in sequence what will be happening that day, recognizing any good behavior through rewards, helping the child understand what they are supposed to be doing instead of showing frustration if they are doing the wrong thing.[5]
