Faculty of Medicine
[edit]The Ansdorf Faculty of Medicine is Skielanda's largest medical school with an enrolment of around 5430 undergraduates and 3870 postgraduates. Ansdorf Med has consistently ranked within the top five nationwide, placing third at the last rating in 2005. High student numbers are matched by a teaching staff of 1650.
The annual undergraduate intake is among the highest in Europe: 430 MChM candidates (280 six-year programme entrants, 150 four-year programme entrants), 150 MDS candidates (100 six-year/50 four-year), 120 Pharmacy students, 225 Biomedical Sciences students and 350 Nursing students. Approximately 50 places in the four-year MChM programme are reserved for science graduates of the University of Ansdorf; most applicants are from the faculty's Biomedical Sciences programme.
Medicine at Prince Anton's
The faculty's principal buildings at the Prince Anton site are:
- Faculty of Medicine Kottimer Building - Three lecture theatres, seminar rooms, the Anatomy unit, clinical and dental training centres, academic staff offices. 6 storeys (including basement), completed 1997.
- Prince Anton Library Building - The library (3 floors), a lecture theatre, tutorial rooms, study rooms, cafeteria, students' common rooms. Red-brick complex, 4 storeys, completed c. 1880.
- Anatomy Building - Two lecture theatres, seminar and tutorial rooms, biomedical teaching laboratories, academic staff offices. The Medical Sciences programme is based here, as are some teaching units of the Faculty of Life Science. The Anatomy unit has moved to the Kottimer Building. 4 storeys, completed c. 1890, adjacent to Medical Library Building.
- Biomedical Sciences Building - Laboratories, specialised medical units, research centres, research staff offices. Sections of the Faculty of Life Sciences are located here (Immunology and Infection; Medical Biochemistry). 8 storeys, completed 2002.
- School of Nursing.
Non-clinical courses for both medical and life science students are usually held at the Medical Library Building or the Anatomy Building. Clinical courses are based at the Kottimer Building and research at the Biomedical Sciences Building.
The faculty also has offices and teaching facilities in all UAHT hospitals.
Teaching Hospitals
Ansdorf Med's main teaching hospitals are:
- Imperial Carlington Infirmary - 950 beds, associated with Empress's College.
- Prince Anton Hospital - 840 beds, associated with Prince Anton College.
- Marberfield Hospital - 485 beds.
Together, these three acute hospitals comprise the University of Ansdorf Hospitals Trust (UAHT) of CHA Ansdorf. All have A&E facilities. The university maintains direct control over teaching facilities in UAHT hospitals.
Ansdorf Med also maintains links with 2 non-acute CHA hospitals, 2 private hospitals and 7 specialist clinics.
Accommodation
[edit]The university is aware that housing costs in Ansdorf are prohibitively high, and therefore strives to provide as many accommodation units as possible. All students who normally live outside a 30-km radius are eligible to apply for university accommodation. Halls accommodation is usually set aside for the lower years.
