The Tribunal Process is an experimental process for dispute resolution.

I have an issue I need resolved[edit]

To make a request, please follow these steps:

  1. Copy the template at the bottom of this page for your request.
  2. State your request in 500 words or fewer, citing supporting diffs where necessary. You are trying to show potential tribunal members that there is a dispute requiring their intervention; you are not trying to prove your case at this time. If your case is accepted a page will be created for involved parties
  3. You are required to place a notice on the user talk page of each person against whom you lodge a complaint, if any.

Do not contact other editors to ask them to take on your case, canvasing for tribunal members may be considered disruptive behavior

  • This is not a page for discussion. Threaded discussions on this page will be deleted, additionally the discussion page is not to be used to debate or present evidence and argument about any request.
  • Uninvolved editors may summarily remove or refactor discussion without comment for brevity.
  • Uninvolved editors may remove requests from this page if they are not accepted within 21 days.

I want to assist in a Tribunal[edit]

First, ensure that you can spend the time required on what may be a difficult issue. Be prepared to have to handle people who may not agree with your decision.

Select a case you have no involvement with. It is very important that you are not, and do not become involved in the issues at hand when taking a case. This includes being asked to take the case by someone involved in the issues, and you should not take cases at request of anyone involved. Taking a case which you have involvement with may be considered disruptive behavior and result in community sanction.

Append your name using *Accept --~~~~ under the case stating you will accept the case. If you are the third name signed, contact each other editor to ask if they are ready to open the case.

When will Tribunal cases be opened[edit]

A case will be opened when three uninvolved editors accept the case, and confirm with each other they can proceed. If three editors have accepted a case, but one of them can not be contacted, their name should be removed from the case and accepting the case should wait until another editor or the original editor accepts the case again.

Cases that go unopened for over 21 days may be deleted from this page, cases with two accepting editors may be given longer to allow for a third.

What does the Tribunal involve[edit]

A page for the tribunal case is created. Those involved with the Tribunal may then post their arguments and evidence to that page.

No Discussion or Outside Comment will be allowed on the page, and Tribunal members are instructed to delete any. The discussion page is to be used by tribunal members only, and any other comments posted there should be deleted. Tribunal members may edit the pages for brevity.

Tribunal members consider the evidence and arguments presented. They should ensure that everyone involved has had a chance to present evidence and an argument. It is at the digression of tribunal members if they should continue a case if an involved party does not present any arguments or evidence, or fails to do so in a reasonable amount of time. They should then discuss the case amongst themselves, in public on the tribunal discussion page. Tribunal members can always ask for additional evidence, or clarification of an argument from the involved editors.

Tribunal members should then all agree on the text of the finding of that tribunal. This must be a unanimous agreement, or the tribunal should provide a finding that they could not agree on the case. At their digression, they may return the request to this page for a fresh tribunal, or alternative steps of dispute resolution can be recommended.

The tribunal may also make, by unanimous agreement, recommendations to any relevant community notice board for any actions they feel should be taken. The tribunal are not to take these actions themselves. It is important that this recommendation be agreed unanimously by the tribunal, and it is not enforceable without community support.


How long should a Tribunal take[edit]

Generally, a tribunal should not take more than a month from being accepted, unless there are special circumstances that cause delays. Restarting as a fresh tribunal may be preferable if a tribunal member becomes unable to continue in the case for a lengthy period of time. Issues that are so complex as to take longer than a month to discuss may not be suited to the tribunal process.

Disrupting and gaming the Tribunal process[edit]

Disrupting or gaming the tribunal process is considered highly disruptive behavior and may result in community sanction.
