formaldehyde and acetaldehyde

Aldehydes[1] and Ketones[2] are basically carbonyl group with formulae's R-CH=O and R-C=OR'.

METHODS OF PREPERATION[edit]

Aldehydes and ketones could be prepared by various methods like

  1. by nitriles
  2. acid chlorides
  3. Grignard reagents

CHEMICAL REACTIONS OF ALDEHYDES AND KETONES[edit]

Reaction with alcohols[edit]

Reactions of aldehydes with alcohols would give rise to hemiacetals which are compounds that are unstable which would further react with another molecule of alcohol in presence of an acidic medium to give rise to acetals which are stable compounds.

Reaction with cyanides[edit]

Reaction of aldehydes or ketones with cyanides would give rise to cyanohydrins <<reflist>>

cyanation of aldehydes with bisulfate

OTHER REACTIONS OF ALDEHYDES AND KETONES Reactions of aldehydes include aldol condensation ,mixed aldol condensation ,cannizaro reactions[3], reamer tieman reaction and so on
