'Her Work'
[edit]Famous Leone Ross that has written quite the number of novels and short stories; we will be focusing on her First shorty story Collection 'Come Let us Sing Anyway' in which it talks about women and series of problems they face. This short story speaks about the different themes such as: desire, compassion. loneliness, abandonment issues, love and sex. She spoke about her past life, her life as a child growing up around her abusive father and her past boyfriend whom was violent. She reflects on how much she faced growing up and shows us how she overcame these battles. Her short stories are a true collection of sorrow, timid, laughter, pain, endurance of what most women go through whether in an abusive home with parents or living with a spouse/partner that suffer in silence. Some of her stories seemed as Jamaicans like to say 'mix up' or 'full of suss' but in reality these are real painful events women face; even today. Leone in sharing these painful, traumatic events I'm hoping to empower women to speak up, and not deal with abusive and toxic relationships. Gender themes were used. She, explained how men were seen as 'dogs' in which one woman wasn't enough for them; as they wanted to be with more than one. Apart from abusive men were seen as distasteful, disgraceful, gullible in the stories. Collection being done in fifteen years, crafted fiction of horror, challenges, funny, different sexualities, politics and erotic relationships. Leone has shown and showed her horrific past which hopefully empower women today; to be stronger than they currently are.
"Summary of Echo"
[edit]In the short story "Echo" by Leone Ross the first stanza speaks about a death of a young man through the eyes of a little girl that will forever be traumatized after seeing his death. She symbolizes his death to flowers. She blood, petals falling as the man got closer to death. Now it ids stigmatized for her that flowers are only given for death and this will forever affect her to a point she didn't want a flowers bouquet for her wedding because it reminded her of his death. The author shows the reader how she views death even though it more significant when a person is murdered. The second stanza, The horticulturist saw the man as a 'weakling'[weakling] and he used his weakness to be cunning to get him out of certain situations. His asthma was an excuse in getting out of problems or danger.
Themes
[edit]Unbounded Sexualities'
[edit]Women were only seen for their beauty throughout the short story 'Echo'. They weren't noticed for their educated minds, or manners or even the way they speak. Sexualizes women and stigmatize them as special and pretty due to why only being pretty. The effect of how women played a part on him, where he thought men only get into fights to fight over women.
Toxic Masculinity
[edit]The man was seen as being 'weak' because he was unable to do anything. He was seen as feeble. There was no empathy for the young man held down on the table.
- It shows how easy men can be targeted in the blink of an eye.
- His mother was shocked how the police officers knocked out her son in the walls of her house. Which was very traumatic for her.
Death
[edit]The author shows that death is inevitably how she speaks about it too easily, where there is no remorse. The young woman that was killed because she was in the wrong company at the wrong time; she was killed because she was wrongly accused in being associated with a murderer. Death seemed like a normal conversation to have. "bradap-brap-brap-brrrrr' This was a different despondent ending. The major theme throughout these short stories was death. Whether it was by police brutality, natural death or by crime.
