Although many people believe that Banda music originated in Sinaloa, it was really started in Zacatecas. The state of Zacatecas is best known for its rich deposits of silver and other minerals, but they did not have an efficient way of mining these oars from the earth, nor did they mine via mine shafts, it was all surface mining. Deep shaft silver mining was a European import, introduced into New Spain in the early 16th century (Hoberman). No significant production in silver mining occurred until after 1536 when German engineers demonstrate simple mining techniques, most importantly, smelting of the silver ores.

These German engineers, wishing to hear the music of their homeland, began to show the locals how to play these instruments and the type of music that is now known as "Banda Music", which of course is extremely similar to German Polkas.

Many people say that Sinaloa has a large German community and that is where the Banda music was born, but the large German population in Sinaloa did not happen until after World War I and II, more than 300 years after Germans arrived to the state of Zacatecas.
