User:Champion/Triple redirects

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alongside double redirects, triple redirects and similar should be avoided, to prevent further confusion to the reader. Triple, quadruple, quintuple redirects etc, are potentially problematic.

How to fix a triple redirect[edit]

  • Suppose page title A redirects to B , which in turn redirects to C, and finally redirects to D.
  • Upon following the link to A, you will see, as illustrated, a page containing:
    • the page title B;
    • a large link to C;
    • a small notice saying "Redirected from A"
  • Click the "A" in "redirected from A".
  • You will see a page containing:
    • the page title A;
    • a large link to B.
  • Click "Edit this page" and change B to D.
  • Then, open page B, which you will see
    • the page title C;
    • a large link to D;
    • a small notice saying "Redirected from B"
  • Click the "B" in "redirected from B".
  • You will see a page containing:
    • the page title B;
    • a large link to C.
  • Click "Edit this page" and change C to D.

Triple redirects and bots[edit]

Triple redirects are eventually automatically fixed by bots, and most are fixed within at least five days of creation, for they first convert it into a double redirect, and soon find that they need to fix it again, thus it can take considerably longer. Because of this, human editors would be best forgetting about other tasks that can't be automated, and if they can, devote their time into fixing these triple redirects.
