From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I have been reading wikipedia for some time and have occasionally made comments on the reference desk. I decided to register so my comments will have a name on them. This is probably a big mistake (having witnessed how addictive WP is!), but it is a done deal now. I may do some editing in the article space, but not right away. --Eriastrum 21:30, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Quotes I like from the reference desk:

  • Hi,I will glade if anybody can help me answer this question.(HOW DOES MORAL STANDARDS SOLVE SOCIAL CONFLICTS).
Moral standards ensure that people do their own homework. Have a look at morals, ethics and come back if you have specific questions. DJ Clayworth 16:56, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

  • I agree completely. This is just a symptom of a much more general problem. Very few people care about spreading misinformation, and very many then wonder how come people are so misinformed. -- Meni Rosenfeld (talk) 10:45, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

  • No, there are no limits to the human brain. You can do anything if you put your mind to it. 64.236.121.129 (talk) 19:48, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
I do wish that was true, but so far I haven't managed to bend a single spoon using just thought. All my attempts at unaided flight have failed as well. 206.252.74.48 (talk) 20:50, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

  • I never paid ANY attention to clothing, like, I wouldn't know what twill is or what pleated meant. Now I have a job that requires me to... any web sites that would show pictures of all the clothes and parts and what they are called? I barely know what a shirt is... THANKS. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.88.122.226 (talk) 09:26, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
You may be interested in Category:Textiles and Category:Clothing. 152.16.16.75 (talk) 10:21, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
And a google search for "fashion glossary" brings up some useful sites. WikiJedits (talk) 10:42, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
We have an article on nudism. I am certain that it covers relevant parts. --Cookatoo.ergo.ZooM (talk) 17:02, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
I thought nudism didn't cover relevant parts. DJ Clayworth (talk) 17:50, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Assume that some person has just invented a method of lifting every single boat out of all the oceans simultaneuosly. How far would the world wide water level drop? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.64.111.95 (talk) 18:37, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
The difference would be utterly insignificant. If you are ever at sea (open ocean, not boating in Maine) you will see how huge and empty it is out there. Plasticup T/C 18:49, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
Per [14], the 2002 merchant marine displacement globally was about 650 million gross tons, or 660 billion kilograms, or 0.66 cubic kilometers. The surface area of the Earth's oceans is about 350 million square kilometers. Division yields an expected average displacement of 2 micrometers, assuming I haven't dropped zeroes in there somewhere. So as Plasticup notes, utterly insignificant. — Lomn 19:04, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
Interesting. I knew it would be small but I didn't think it would be that small.
Interesting, but not surprising. Most feminists - even the odd male one - would agree with your humble statement. --Cookatoo.ergo.ZooM (talk) 20:49, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
