The Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy (also known as King's or KCL SSPP) is the social science and public policy faculty of King's College London, and one of the nine Schools of Study of the university. It is situated on the Strand in the East Wing of Somerset House and Aldwych, southern part of the Westminster at Bush House. King's SSPP is one of the largest university communities for social research and education in the UK. It is also one of the world-leading institution across the social sciences, from education to communication, geography to global health, political economy to management, and from security studies to international development, currently ranking in the world's top 40 in social sciences and management in the QS University Rankings by Subject 2016

The Dean of the faculty is Frans Berkhout, who held post-doctoral research at Princeton University. Berkhout's appointment follows the faculty's plan to expand and launch its business and management department into a business and management school predominantly based at Bush House in Aldwych.

The faculty is also one of the eight international faculties that are members of the iCUBE.

School of Education, Communication & Society (ECS)

For over 40 years, ECS has been one of the leading teacher education and educational research institutions. It is renowned for its research and teaching expertise in the following: mathematics and science education; language, culture and communication; and public policy. It has a history of sharing its research evidence to public policy debates and the professional communities of multi-sector practitioners in the UK as well as in the global arena. Currently, ECS provides an undergraduate programme in BA English Language & Linguistics, and offers more than 20 postgraduate programmes in disciplines such as Child Studies, Education and Linguistics.

School of Global Affairs

The School of Global Affairs is a dynamic hub of multi-disciplinary teaching and research programmes that aims to address the key main issues facing today's world that is increasingly being globalised. Three departments -- Geography, Global Health & Social Medicine, and International Development departments -- as well as three regional institutes: the Brazil, the Lau China and the India Institutes. The school combines empirical, intellectual and policy skills and specialisations in response to matters of wide concerns, such as climate change, cross-border migration, disasters, hazards & risks as well as global health challenges facing the developed and emerging economies.

Department of Geography

As the oldest among the three departments under the School of Global Affairs, Geography Department is a large academic and research body with over 50 staff. In the latest QS rankings of world universities subject departments, King’s Geography has been ranked 18th globally. In the recently concluded Research Excellence Framework in the UK, almost 80% of the department's research were regarded as internationally excellent or world leading in quality. Approximately 350 undergraduates, 175 masters students and over 100 PhD students are are being taught or supervised by the department.

Under the department is King's Centre for Risk Management, established in 2002 as a centre of excellence exploring risk issues through its international research on risk assessment, communication, governance and management. It works closely with businesses, government organisations and NGOs on a wide-ranging academic fellowships and projects and is a centre for advanced studies in risk for postgraduates (both on a masters and doctoral level).

Department of Global Health & Social Medicine

Formerly known as the Department of Social Science, Health & Medicine which was established in 2012, the current Department of Global Health & Social Medicine (GHSM) is a special interdisciplinary scholarship rated among the ranks of the top 10 sociology departments, nationally. It seeks to address the ever changing topography of health and medicine from the perspective of social science, bringing together biomedical experts, clinicians and social scientists in its research-led undergraduate and postgraduate teachings as well as in its postdoctoral level. The research outputs of GHSM were rated number 2 in the UK and 100% of its research impact were regarded as world-leading or international excellent.

Under the GHSM department is the Institute of Gerontology in partnership with Age UK, one of the premier gerontological research and teaching institution globally. It is a centre of research expertise in multi-disciplinary research into ageing, linking with the King's academic community as well as other institutions. Relevant to this is the King's Centre for Global Ageing, that links with King's departments and centres with King's Health Partners as well other universities such as University of Manchester ad University of Sussex

School of Management & Business

The School of Management & Business has seen growth and development in the recent years. Formerly known as the Department of Management, it has been expanded to accommodate new programme offerings focusing on banking and finance among others. Acknowledged by the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 as one of the best departments in the UK. It was also ranked 5th of all UK management departments in the 2008 RAE with one third of our research activity assessed as ‘world leading’. In terms of the strength of its publications, the School ranks 8th in the UK when institutions are ranked by the percentage of work that is 3* and 4*. 82 per cent of the published research submitted for assessment was deemed to be world leading and internationally excellent. 50 per cent of the School's impact case studies were given the top rating of 4*. Professor Tony Edwards, Head of School, said: ‘The School of Management & Business' REF results demonstrate the sustained impact of our research at the highest echelons of government and companies, nationally and internationally. This impact demonstrates the School's ability to advance and shape management and public policy debate.’ We strive to create an international environment for learning and currently have students from over 50 countries enrolled on one of our programmes. For the 2014 National Student Survey, the School of Management & Business was awarded the largest increase in satisfaction rating within King’s College London.

History

From the time King's College London was founded in 1829, it has grown and developed its programmes and offerings throughout the years. A Department of Military Science existed from 1848 to 1859 whilst King's Department of Geography has been serving the academic community since 1856.

The formalisation of the School of Social Science to the original King's Arts departments has Education, War Studies and Geography incorporated in the curriculum and these departments by 2001 have grown organically, as part of the School of Social Science & Public Policy, and independent from the expanding School of Arts & Humanities. Over the past few years, SSP has introduced interdisciplinary programmes, paving for new developments in teaching and research, for instance through the KCRM, . The School of Social Science and Public Policy became the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy in 2014.

The faculty is situated in the centre of London. Originally located in the King's Building, adjacent to Somerset House and Embankment along the River Thames but growth of the discipline has seen it expanded in the Waterloo Campus for business, management and education studies. The year 2015 saw SSPP consolidate, occupying the newly acquired Bush House group of buildings.

The faculty provides social science instruction at undergraduate and graduate levels. It offers a three-year undergraduate programmes (BA or BSc), with a number of joint programmes with partner institutions around the world including the United States (XXXX), France (XXX), Germany (Humboldt University), Singapre (National University of Singapore), and Australia (XXX) amongst others.

Graduate taught and research programmes include full-time and part-time MA, MSc and PhD/DBA programmes, as well as distance-learning courses on some programmes. As part of the initiatives of King's College London, the faculty has conferred its own degrees since 2007, having previously been a contributor to the University of London Intercollegiate programme. Those who study for the degree may elect to take a specialisation in one of several of the faculty's schools.

The Faculty has around XXXX doctoral researchers. The faculty has hosted several international conferences since 2001, as well as educational and social events for the social science community and liaises with other schools and faculties on the students and academics' behalf.

Pre-Undergraduate

The general International Foundation Programme at King's prepares students for their undergraduate degree programmes, teaching chosen scholarly subject combined with academic English language tutorials.

Research

The Faculty offers PhD programmes in joint partnership with other top-ranking global universities such as Hong Kong University, Humboldt University and National University of Singapore.

The school is host to research projects funded by the British Academy, the Economic and Social Research Council, European Commission as well as other international organisations. DENTAL INSTITUTE

History of Licentiate in Dental Surgery (LDS) at KCL:

Dental education at Guy's Hospital began in 1799 by Joseph Fox who gave series of lectures on dental surgery:

Joseph Fox was promoted to Assistant Dental Surgeon and was succeeded in 1817 or 1825 by Thomas Bell. However, it was Frederick Newland Pendley who would be instrumental in the development of the dental school at Guy's Hospital.

Newland Pendley As a dental school, however, only two were officially recognised in London - the Royal Dental Hospital and the National Dental Hospital. It was the belief by the two schools that they could sufficiently cater and provide all the relevant treatment required, hence any additional school is unnecessary. However,
