History[edit]

The Roman Pécs[edit]

Between 81 and 96 A.D., an enhanced military presence and the construction of military camps and stone fortifications were required to protect against various barbarian groups. The land of what today is Pécs belonged to the province of Pannonia after it was absorbed into the Roman Empire.[2]

Middle Age[edit]

During the Middle Ages, Pécs was the seat of the Diocese of Pécs, and that of the County of Baranya. Therefore, it functioned as a middle-level religious and lay administrative centre [3].

Pécs under the Ottoman Regimen[edit]

The Ottoman presence began with the siege of Pécs in September 1541, however they were only able to occupy it in 1543.[4]
