Hainosaurus bernardi is an extinct species of large, predatory marine lizard, belonging to the subfamily Tylosaurinae within the family Mosasauridae. With a skull-length of up to 1.5 meters it was one of the largest mosasaurs[1]. The species is known principally from two skulls and partial postcranial skeletons from the Late Maastrichtian of Belgium[1].
Taxonomy[edit]
The species was named and described by Louis Dollo in 1885[2][3]. H. bernardi is the only species in his genus that is currently known from sufficient material and formally named. Isolated fossil material from central Europe, ranging in age from the Campanian to Late Maastrichtian indicates the potential presence of more species but these are at present to poorly known. Other species formerly assigned to Hainosaurus were referred to the genus Tylosaurus instead.
