Professor N.S. Ramaswamy was the Director of IIMB from Oct. 72. He retired in March 1986. In 2006, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan and appointed him as a National Research Professor in Management for his outstanding contribution to the Country. Throughout his 50 years of public life, he brought fresh thinking, added new and additional dimensions, did pioneering work not attempted in India or abroad, carried out his missions with selfless service and dedication, brought philosophical and spiritual concepts into the secular world of life work.

Personal Information

Prof N.S. Ramaswamy was born on March 2nd, 1926, in Thrissur, Kerala. His father, N. R. Srinivasa Iyer, IPS, was a renowned Police Officer, who retired as IG of Police of Kerala State. Professor married Rajam Parvathi in May, 1949. His son, Rajan Srinivasan, is Director of Indus Biotech, producing Ayurvedic formulations for world market. His daughter, Rajani, is in US, whose husband is CEO, WIPRO, in charge of Americas and Europe. His three granddaughters are studying in US, and his grandson is Computer Engineer in UK.

Education

Professor obtained his B.Sc and BE degrees from Madras University. He underwent Postgraduate education in Glasgow, Lehigh and Stanford Universities as well as short term training in several institutions in US and Europe. Throughout his education in India, he was actively involved in student movement, social service and public affairs, where he held elected positions as Chairman, Secretary, etc.

Professional Bodies

He was the elected National President of the Indian Institute of Industrial Engineering, Computer Society of India and World Productivity Congress. He was associated with the Management and Productivity movement from the early 50s and contributed to the establishment of professional bodies and associations all over India. He addressed prestigious International Conferences – World Management Congress in Munich, American Society for Training and Development in New York, World Productivity Congress in Hague, European Productivity Council in Brussel, Buffalo Congress in Egypt and Bulgaria, Donkey Welfare Conference in Mexico, Animal Power Conferences in Australia and US, Training and Development Congress in Bangkok, World Vet Congress in Tokyo, etc. He gave lectures on Management and Animal Welfare in several Universities in India and US.

As an animal lover from childhood days, he was Chairman of the Animal Welfare Board of India. He estimated the contribution of livestock to GNP, particularly of animal power and meat. From the 60s, he has been studying rural development and applied appropriate technology techniques and management for rural development. He delivered the prestigious Sardar Patel Memorial Lecture over the All India Radio in the 70s. He was the first to introduce, in India, techniques, such as, CPM, Operation Research and Management Games. He was among the first set of Professors of Management in the University system in 1962 before IIMs. He introduced Management and Productivity techniques in Municipal Corporations and Hospitals in the fifties.

Management

He has been associated with Management movement from early 50s. He introduced Postgraduate Degree Programme in Bombay University in 1964. He established the Urban Development Centre in Bombay in 1965. He wrote the first Report on Computerization for the Third World, on behalf of UNIDO. In NITIE, he introduced the first Postgraduate Programme in Industrial Engineering and took NITIE to international standard.

He was Director of both NITIE, Bombay, and IIM, Bangalore, for two and half years. As founder Director of IIM, Bangalore, he introduced sectoral programmes, taking Management Science to sectors other than business and industry, such as, infrastructure utilities and services, Government, Rural Development, Habitat, Education, Health, etc. He also brought in ethical and moral dimensions to Management as well as cultural and spiritual components.

IIM, Bangalore, established two State level Institutes of Management for training Government officials - in Chennai and Trivandrum, which is a pioneering venture. Fellowship programme was infra-structure and unorganized sectors.

IIM-B Campus is unique in architectural concepts. IIM-B conducted hundreds of MDP programmes for all departments in Central and State Governments. He introduced the concept of social relevance and moral excellence in management programmes

Post Retirement

After retiring from IIM, Bangalore, in March 1986, he established two NGOs in Bangalore – CARTMAN and Indian Heritage Academy. CARTMAN is engaged in Animal Welfare, Environment, Ecology, Appropriate Technology, Rural Development, Poor children’s programme, etc. CARTMAN also conducts HRD programmes for Municipal services, such as BDA, BMP, Electricity Board, Transport, Health Services, etc. Recognizing the good work done by CARTMAN, the Karnataka Government has assigned a two-acre plot for establishment and maintenance of a Children’s Education Centre for Animal Welfare and Environmental Awareness. This Eco Park is popular. Free vet care is given.

Indian Heritage Academy (IHA) is engaged in training in music, yoga, meditation, painting, clay modeling, conducting HRD programmes for Educational Institutions and Corporate Sector on ethics and morals, organizing religious and cultural festivals, programmes for senior citizens and women, etc. IHA also organizes music concerts and dance recitals.

Prof. Ramaswamy conducts HRD Programmes on ethical and moral dimensions of Management for the Corporate Sector and Educational Institutions as well as programmes on Faculty Development for Technical and Management institutes. He is campaigning for Vegetarianism and Appropriate technology for Development of the Unorganised Sector.
