Matsumoto Hoji (松本 奉時, DOB unknown - September 30 1800[1][2], Osaka[3]), also known as Shusuke (周助/周介) and Hoji Dojin (奉時道人), was a mid-Edo period painter and picture framer. He was particularly fond of and skilled at ink-wash zenga[4] paintings, especially those of Japanese toads.
Life
[edit]He was active in Tenmei (1781 - 1788) and Kansei (1789 - 1801) eras. He hailed from Osaka, living in Edobori neighborhood.[3]
He was a picture framer by profession, but also worked as an artist. He studied the landscape painting style of Yosa Buson.[5][6]
He loved frogs, and was not satisfied with just raising and breeding them. He collected various frog-related items and often painted frogs.[2] This passion was recorded in the "Kien Bunshu" by Kien Minagawa.[3]
He had interactions with other artists of his time, and was close friends with Ito Jakuchu, who was active in the mid-Edo period.[2] He even visited Sekihoji Temple, where Jakuchu lived in retirement in his later years[7], and there are also works that were influenced by Jakuchu. His other friends include 木村蒹葭堂、伊東若冲、細谷半斎、平賀蕉斎、菅茶山.
There are several ink paintings of the same composition as the Toad, a representative work of Houji, which are painted with large, dynamic brushstrokes. Many of these works are accompanied by inscriptions by the Osaka kyoshi (狂詩) poet 畠中観斎(銅脈先生)and it is believed that Kansai and Houji especially enjoyed the combination of calligraphy and painting.[8].
Hoji considered a dream of a dragon he had during the 6 year of Tenmei era (1786) to be a good omen, and from then on he actively began collecting calligraphy and paintings. He compiled the works he collected into art albums such as "Hoji Seiganjo"「奉時清玩帖」and treasured them as he asked the leading calligraphers, painters, and writers of the time to write their own works. In「諸名家合作(松本奉時に依る)」in addition to Jakuchu, you can see messages from a splendid lineup of artists from Kyoto and Osaka, such as 慈雲飲光, 日野資枝, 西依成斉, Nakai Chikuzan, 六如慈周, 細合半斉, 皆川淇園, 墨江武禅, 福原五岳, 中江杜徴, 森周峯, 圓山応瑞, 奥田元継, Mori Sosen, 木村蒹葭堂, 伊藤東所, 長沢芦雪, 月僊, 上田耕夫, 篠崎三嶋, 呉春. In the center left of the painting, Kenkado has painted "Monkey on Bamboo" with a firm brushstroke that seems solemn. The Hoji's ownership seal is stamped in the lower left of the painting[9].
