The Fastest Production Car is a term that evokes controversy.(ref) There is no single body that defines what constitutes a production car is nor is there any single body that certifies the speed they attain.(ref)

With those limitations in mind, the cars listed in the List of fastest production cars are either the current fastest production car in the world or have been the fastest production car at some time in the past that match the common factors listed below.

Common factors

Motor Vehicle Manufacturer

The vehicles on the List of fastest production cars have been produced by manufacturers ranging from large companies such as Jaquar, Ferrari, and Lamborgini to the smaller specialist performance vehicle firms such as Shelby and Koenigg..... None have been built outside of a commercial enterprise.

Available for purchase

All the listed vehicles were available for the people to purchase in the same form as they were tested. Some such as the Jaguar XJ220 were offered to a limited number of people(ref).

Not a prototype

None of the vehicles were classified at the time of testing as prototypes. They were the final production model.

Unmodified

None of the vehicles were modified beyond the form in which it could or can be purchased from the manufacturer. Modified versions of production cars such as abc were excluded.(ref}

Number produced

The top speed of the car has been determined in a verifiable road test. It is not theoretical or provided solely by the manufacturer.

Vehicles under development

There are at least three manufacturers who are developing cars with the intention that they become the current fastest porduction car. These are Koenigg.., SSC (Shelby Super Cars), and .... . All three manufacturers are seeking to attain a top speed of about 275mph. Their cars are at varying stages of development with prototypes under testing.
