The Property of Hate is a webcomic written and illustrated by Sarah Jolley. The comic features the adventures of Hero and RGB as they traverse the World of Make Believe, allegorical world of dreams and imagination, on a quest to defeat an entity known as Hate. The Property of Hate began in February 2012 and consists of 25 chapters. Two volumes of the comic have been released in print that span the first 14 chapters.

Plot[edit]

Human minds have created a dangerous realm that is in need of a hero. This world is home to abstract concepts such as dreams, ideas, lies, doubts, and fears. On a night in Manchester, a young girl is visited by a denizen of the realm, RGB, who asks her to be a hero. The duo enters the World of Make Believe and begin their journey.[1][2]

The World of Make Believe is an allegorical world full of thoughts and ideas that are given form. Upon entering the new world, the girl learns that she is no longer herself and rather the idea of who she is. As a consequence of entering the World of Make Believe, the girl is unable to recall her name and instead goes by “Hero”, a title given to her by RGB. Hero soon befriends Assok, a playful green sock that mimics the speech of those around it. Hero is brought into the world to defeat Hate, a mysterious entity who threatens safety of the World of Make Believe. Hero, RGB, and Assok journey across the vast world, encountering a diverse cast of monsters along the way.

Setting[edit]

The World of Make Believe is the name that Hero gives to the world she is brought to. The fantastical realm is described by RGB as being made entirely of “stuff”, which is itself created from thoughts. Much of the world is allegorical, as it is populated with physical representations of many abstract concepts. Even the notion of an idea will develop into a physical form, and the more attention an idea is given, the more powerful it becomes.

Intelligent and dangerous monsters inhabit the lands, such as Hero’s companions, RGB and Assok. All of the monsters in the world are unfinished, forgotten, or abandoned characters who were never given their own story. A monster can change its appearance if it acquires “stuff”, as seen when an owl consumes a glove and incorporates the glove into its design as talons. If a monster can complete their design, they will become realized and leave the World of Make Believe in favour of their own story. Should the inspiration of a monster fade, however, it dies.

The World of Make Believe is also home to many miscellaneous creatures that take personify concepts related to the human psyche. The emotion of fear takes the form of a sharp rabid creature that attacks any who come near, doubt is presented as a leech that attaches to its victim, and lies are small harmless creatures who only become dangerous if fed.

RGB is the monster who brings Hero to the World of Make Believe. He resembles a circus ringleader with a CRT television for a head and describes himself as "the most dangerous monster of all". RGB is infamous in the World of Make Believe as he has recruited many heroes before, all of whom were defeated and turned into monsters by Hate.

Development[edit]

Development on the webcomic has been progressing since it began in February 2012.[3] The webcomic is currently on its 25th chapter.

Two volumes of the Property of Hate have been published. Jolley self-published the first volume, and used the crowdfunding website, Kickstarter, to fund publication of the second volume. The project raised $34,244, surpassing its goal of $26,000, and the volume released in May 2018. As a stretch goal, the first volume was sent into print again.[3]

Reception[edit]

Marie Anello of the Absolute described the webcomic as “strange, thoughtful, and visually arresting.” While criticizing the story as deceptively simple, Anello praised the webcomic’s art, characters, and feeling of exploration.[1]
