Depression is defined as an illness, but also has an evolutionary meaning. Depression can be an evolved mechanism of distress telling us to hibernate, escape or change something.[1]
Depression is a well known, serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Depression provokes feelings or sadness and a general loss of interest. depression can also be responsible for ones emotional and physical problems which could decrease a persons daily functions.[2]
People who identify themselves with different sexual orientations or genders may have increased symptoms of anxiety and depression compared to heterosexual and cisgender individuals. although the symptom presentation may be similar, individuals that label themselves as someone with a different sexual orientation or gender generally experience additional identity-based stressors that can contribute to the development of anxiety and depression, and that are significant to know for their treatment.
