ニューヨーク市スクール・オブ・ビジュアル・アーツ（SVA NYC, [School of Visual Arts] Error: {{Lang-xx}}: conflicting: |links= and |link= (help)）は美術学校（en）学校法人（en）で所在地はニューヨーク市マンハッタン。1947年創立、独立系美術デザイン学校連盟（en）の加盟校である[2]。

沿革[edit]

創設者Silas H. Rhodesならびにen:Burne Hogarthが 漫画挿絵学校 Cartoonists and Illustrators School を建学した1947年[3]、教師3名と学生35名でスタートし[4]、その多くは第二次世界大戦の退役軍人として政府の en:G.I. Billのもと、授業料の大半を免除されていた[5]。校名は1956年に「スクール・オブ・ビジュアル・アーツ」School of Visual Arts に改称[3]、第1期の学位授与は1972年である[6]。学位は1983年に修士 en:Master of Fine Arts を追加した（先攻は絵画 en:painting と作図 en:drawing 、彫刻 en:sculpture）[7]。

教職員は合計1000名超[8]、学生数は3000名超を数える[1][4]。学部には学士課程11講座、大学院に修士課程22講座を置き、中部州大学各種学校連盟高等教育連絡会 en:Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools[4][9] ならびに全米美術学校連盟 en:National Association of Schools of Art and Design に加盟する[10]。

インテリアデザイン先攻の学位 en:interior design BFA はインテリアデザイン学位協議会 en:Council for Interior Design Accreditation,[11]の認証学位である。また美術療法の修士号MPS en:art therapy は専門機関 en:American Art Therapy Association,[12] 、美術教育の修士号は en:Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation.[13]から認定を受けた学位である。

建学50周年を記念し、1997年に en:George Tscherny によるロゴが決まり[14] その後、2013年に更新された[4]。

社会人教育[edit]

en:continuing education では教養課程としてほとんどの専攻科目を受講できる。スペイン語による授業を「¿Hablas Diseño?」としてまとめ、en:advertising, en:branding, en:cartooning, en:copywriting, en:illustration、 en:marketing を開講。さらに実務面のen:professional development や en:corporate training を教え、夏季講習には集中講座 residency プログラムを提供する[17]。

短期海外留学制度en:study abroad があり、渡航先と研修科目は多岐にわたる.[18]。

en:PayScale によると「見込み年収の高い美術学校上位10校2013–2014年版」 "Top 10 Art & Design Schools by Salary Potential" に選出された.[19]。 en:U.S. News & World Report,[20] の美術学校部門で18位、また修士課程（MFA）の写真、ビデオと関連メディアプログラムはits 全米5位 [21]。

校舎とキャンパス[edit]

マンハッタンに複数の校舎をかまえ、東の en:Gramercy Park 地区に、西の Chelsea 地区に分かれる。学生寮はロワーイーストサイドの Ludlow Streetに立つ[22]。また短期間ながら1994年から1997年までSavannah, Georgia; に分校があり、名称をめぐり en:Savannah College of Art and Designに起訴されたのち、閉校した

図書館には書籍や定期刊行物に加え、視聴覚資料が豊かである[24]。en:Milton Glaserデザイン研究センター文書館にen:Chermayeff & Geismar、en:Seymour Chwast、en:Heinz Edelmann、en:Milton Glaser, Steven Heller、en:Ed McCabe、en:James McMullan、en:Tony Palladino、en:George Tscherny、en:Henry Wolfの資料がある。本校の文書保存事業SVAアーカイブは大学史に関わる資料を収集する[25][26]。

西21番街の校舎[edit]

チェルシー地区 Chelsea地区には6番街と7番街の間、 Sixth Avenue and Seventh Avenue 133番地と141番地に校舎があり[27][28]、素描や絵画のアトリエを置く。

大学の執務室と教室のある132番地と136番地の建物で教える科目はart criticism、art education, art therapy、cartooning、computer art、en:design、en:illustration 、en:writing。未来ビジュアルの研究室が132番地にあり[29]、従来の画像制作と最新の画像合成の設備を備え、レジデンス制度を設けて美術家の研究と制作が行われている[30]。

劇場[edit]

8番街と9番街の間、西23番街333番地（チェルシー）にある大学の劇場は、かつてクリアビュー・チェルシー・ウエスト・シネマという映画館だったものを2008年に購入して改修、2009年1月から使っている。内外装デザインはミルトン・グレイサー en:Milton Glaser が手がけ、マーキー上部に設置した彫刻作品も含まれる。床面積 20,000-square-foot (1,900 m2) には劇場が大小2ヵ所あり、定員はそれぞれ480席と265席。授業や講演会、上映会その他の一般向けの催しにも用いる。またイーサン・ホーク監督の『 The Daybreakers 』のニューヨークプレミア上映会を祝い、世界クラスの人気作の先行上映会場として2010年のドキュメンタリー作品『 Redlight』 en:Lucy Liu、アニメ作品『en:Allen Gregory』（2011年 :en:Fox）、『The Hunger Games.』（2012年）などである。また映画界では映画祭の会場として Tribeca と GenArt に貸し出し、Michael ブルームバーグ市長はPlaNYC というゴミ問題対策のイニシアティブ呼びかけに使い、市長室の映像関連担当 Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre & Broadcastingも使用した[31]。1990年以来、この劇場を拠点とする映画祭は Dusty Film & Animation Festival で、新人映画監督やアニメ作家の発表の場として学部の BFA 映画ビデオ専攻ならびに BFA アニメーション専攻の学生が出展する[32]。

画廊、展示施設[edit]

大学が管理する画廊・展示施設 gallery は3ヵ所。チェルシー画廊は西26丁目601番地の15階。フラットアイアン画廊は西21丁目 133/141 番地、グラマシー画廊は東23丁目 209 番地。展示作品は学生からプロまでで、展覧会は無料で一般開放する[33]。

学生寮[edit]

複数の寮が用意されている。

  • 23丁目寮（旧称新寮）　東23丁目215番地。アパート形式の寮で入学資格は新入生[34][35]。
  • グラマシー女性寮　グラマシーパーク南17番地。女子学生のみ。入寮者には :en:Gramercy Parkの合鍵が渡される[34][36]。
  • ラドロー寮 ラドロー通り101番地[37]。2009年開設、定員350名で個室259室と2人部屋47室。
  • 24丁目寮 総床面積146,000 square feet (13,600 m2)、14階建で2016年に開設。マグナム不動産グループと40ノースが地所を2015年4月に3225万アメリカドルで購入、売主はNPO International Center for the Disabledである。事務所の区画に加え、続き部屋242部屋に505名が入寮する同寮は、大学の学生寮を代表する存在である[34]。また大学の部署群「Residence Life」[38]、「International Students Office」[39]、「Student Affairs」[40]に加え、学生自治会「Visual Arts Student Association」[41]が入居する。

閉館した学生寮[edit]

  • ジョージ・ワシントン寮 レキシントン通り23番地 :en:23 Lexington Avenue[34]。この建物のリース契約が2016年初に切れ、それまで大学の代表的な寮の座を24丁目寮に譲った[42]。
