Adoption

Hi,

I recently signed myself up for adoption, i looked at your adoptor listing and it said you an avid video gamer (this i like).

No problem. One thing I would suggest right off the bat is to always use edit summaries, even when editing your own userspace or replying on a talk page. (Simple summaries like "re" or "copyedit" are fine, but just use something). There's a setting in preferences that you can set to remind you to use edit summaries (Preferences → Editing → Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary). xenocidic ( talk ¿ review ) 12:56, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

I think Steve's point is that if you one day wish to become a wikiadmin, you need to exercise the utmost civility and show that you are mature (many RFA participants can be somewhat age-ist, so you need to really keep your nose clean). xenocidic ( talk ¿ review ) 13:50, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Indeed, but it's not just about the RfA. Me personally, things like that, I just can't tolerate at all. Incivility, such as that, I just find really poor behaviour. We strive on Wikipedia to be civil, even when others are not. Two wrongs don't make a right. Also, you really should remove the message at the top of your talk page, the hidden "warning" to vandals. Huggle and vandal fighting

Huggle is an excellent and powerful tool, but I would advise accuracy over quantity - unless it is absolutely clear that the edit is vandalism, you should be cautious about using Huggle to revert it - as it uses the native rollback function and if you use native rollback on something that is not clear vandalism you risk losing the permission to use native rollback. xenocidic ( talk ¿ review ) 14:17, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Using native rollback to rollback that talk page edit may been unwise - especially because it essentially changed what someone said. I wouldn't say right out of line, but as you've seen, sometimes it's best to focus your efforts on clear-cut cases of vandalism. Two other things, 1) remember to rise above... comments like this could come back to haunt you one day (I see you already deleted it, so that's good). 2) edit summaries - I see you're using them, but you're using summaries like "-" , while this is ok for your own user space, make sure to use a more descriptive summary elsewhere (for example "update ec" would have been more appropriate here). I would even advise descriptive summaries for your userspace, one day you might want to track back to see where you made a particular change and you'll be hard pressed to do so. k, I won't bother updating you then. as far as edit summaries - I don't know if IE does this, but Firefox saves edit summaries so that you can just type a few letters and then select a previously used edit summary... highly reccomended if you're still using IE. http://www.mozilla.com . cheers, xenocidic ( talk ¿ review ) 14:56, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Thankyou for bringing editcountitis to my attention, I was brain washed !!!!! lol nah seriously though i was getting a bit obsessed with it. from now on ill leave it alone :-) What do you think are good benchmarks to become an admin, at present im setting goals to become an admin. So far it will be around Nov 08 that ill nominate. You can see my current list of self imposed requirements in my "Log" page on my nav bar. Those are certainly admirable goals, but keep in mind that succeeding at RfA is not just having a series of checkmarks next to an arbitrary number of x-space edits, but a mindset of being committed to the improvement of the encyclopedia. More importantly, it involves earning the trust of the community. The first (a desire to improve the encyclopedia) I think you already have, but the second can only be achieved by internalizing this mantra (who I quote from my would-be admin coach): Civility, Maturity, and Responsibility. Also, keep in mind that 500 quality, article-building edits to the mainspace will be viewed more favorably than 10,000 huggle-automated vandal reversions (not that vandal-fighting is not important work - it is - but a major concern at RfA is that a user requesting tools which include the ability to tear down the encyclopedia has not done enough building it up). Well, the best thing to do would be keep an eye on WP:RFA. Look at what most users are questioned about (The 'optional questions') and how they respond. You could also read through new admin school, and look through some admin coaching pages of people who are currently on admin coaching. xenocidic (talk) 02:31, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Heh... It's got promise (and it's definitely out there, I've seen some people that suffer from it) but it needs work. Since we're already in the WP space, we'll work on it there, but in the future humour pages should be prepared in your sandbox until they're really well fleshed out. Graduation
  • Prom3th3an, since it seems you've secured yourself an admin coach, which is really just like a higher-level and focused form of adoption, would it make sense to consider you at this time, a "graduate" of WP:AAU, and archive your adoption subpage? I've no problem continuing as your adopter if you so desire, but I'm not sure if it would make sense.   • I believe that every action has a consequence and by this I mean when I requested admincoaching, I forgot to think twice about my loosing my adoption (as would be appropriate) Ah well, As you pointed out the adoption has served its purpose and is no longer appropriate due to the superior admin coaching. Which is a shame really cause its nice to be adopted :P. But know this, I aint going anywhere without giving you a little gift of appreciation for your time and efforts

No problem, and I appreciate that. Don't worry, I'm not hurt or offended by you seeking admin coaching. At the risk of getting ahead of myself, should my RFA be successful, I would be pleased to serve as an "assistant coach" (I won't say co-coach because I'd be a "green" admin, so to speak) if Bugbear didn't mind.
As for the adoption. Even though we've only been working together for a very short time, I've already seen improvements in the way you approach your wiki contributions and how you handle your interactions with other users. Remember these three words Civility, Maturity, Responsibility, they will help you attain your goal.
