The High Council of Nobility (Dutch: Hoge Raad van Adel) is the advisory body of the Dutch government on matters concerning the Dutch nobility and heraldry.

The council was established by sovereign order of 24 June 1814 as a "College of Heraldry" under the title "High Council of Nobility".

An end to the class society and nobility was in the constitution nobility. This was a radical change for the young Dutch institute Adel and to the Council. The advisory paying from 1814 to 1848 of the king, the Supreme Council of Nobility, was disbanded.

The composition and powers of the Supreme Council of Nobility were last recorded in the Law on the nobility of May 10, 1994 (Official Gazette 360). Between 1814 and 1819 and from 1844 to 1852 it was a High Council of State.

Current role[edit]

The council is engaged in, among other things:

  • The registration of the Dutch nobility of the Kingdom of the Netherlands by the filiatieregister, a genealogical record of the nobility
  • The composition and modification of weapons of provinces, municipalities and other public bodies or institutions
  • Advising on the arms and the flag of the kingdom and the standards of the members of the royal family which are determined by royal decree
  • Keeping a register of flags, in which the flags of provinces, water boards and municipalities are recorded and described

Permanent advisory body[edit]

As a a permanent advisory body to:[1]

  • the Minister of Defence, on matters concerning emblems and medals of the Armed Forces
  • the Minister of General Affairs, on names, titles and heraldry of members of the royal family, the national coat of arms and the Dutch flag
  • the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, on nobility business and the composition and modification of weapons of authorities
  • the Minister of Justice, on applications for change of name, and the names of noble families

Composition[edit]

The chairman and the members of the Supreme Council of Nobility shall be appointed by the Crown for life.

As the first President of the Council was appointed in 1814 Willem Anne Baron Spaen la Lecq (1750-1817), the First Secretary Esq. Mr. Jacob van der Lely Oudewater (1769-1825)

The current president is Esq. Mr. Johan Pieter de Savornin Lohman (since 2015). The members are:

  • mr. H.C.R.M. Baron de Wijkerslooth the Weerdesteijn (since 2005);
  • Drs. R. M. Baroness van Pallandt (since 2010);
  • mr. C.J.A. Baroness Snouckaert of Schauburg-Buchwaldt (since 2012);
  • Esq. mr. F.J.M.I. of Rijckevorsel van Kessel (since January 1, 2017).

Secretary is mr. M.R.M.M. Scheidius (since 2015)
