An amphibious assault vehicle (AAV) , also known as an amtrac, is a amphibious combat vehicle used for transporting marine forces in amphibious operations. They are an essential component of amphibious landings.
Design[edit]
AAV's are typically tracked vehicles capable of traveling at 8 miles per hour (7.0 kn) across water. They carry around 20 infantry in an armored rear compartment.[1]
Role[edit]
In U.S. amphibious combat units the amphibious fighting vehicle is the base of any amphibious operation. It is supported by amphibious light armored vehicles and helicopters.
The AAV debarks from an amphibious assault ship at a speed of 8 miles per hour (7.0 kn).
