History

Foundation

Tokyo Gakugei University was completed by the merger of six schools. Tokyo First Teacher’s Training College, Tokyo First Teacher’s Training College for Women, Tokyo Second Teacher’s Training College, Tokyo Second Teacher’s Training College for Women, Tokyo Third Teacher’s Training College, and Tokyo Youth Teacher’s Training College.

Wartime

During World War II, many schools' years of attendance were restricted because of the war, but not the normal school. The administration at that time gave preferential treatment to the normal school because of its emphasis on the students of the normal school, which was the core of the educational system. In addition, like medical undergraduates, students of the Normal School were also exempted from the mobilization of students.However, as the war situation worsened, the preferential policies were no longer in place, and when the direction of the educational content was to "increase the war effort," the number of classes could be changed and education at the Normal School was virtually halted.

Tokyo Gakugei University

Tokyo Gakugei University was formally chartered as a university in 1949 when four teacher training institutions (Tokyo First (1943~1949), Second (1943~1949), Third (1943~1949) Normal School and Tokyo Youth Normal School (1944~1949)) in Tokyo from the pre-war era were merged. In 1949, Japanese normal schools were elevated to universities of liberal arts, following the American model. The term “gakugei(学芸)” is a translation of “liberal arts” in English. 　A Graduate School of Education (master's program) was established to provide education and research in a wide range of fields, training competent educators equipped with a high level of specialized knowledge and skills. In 1996 the United Graduate School of Education (doctoral course) was established jointly with Saitama University, Chiba University, and Yokohama National University as an inter university graduate school for the purpose of developing researchers mainly in the field of curriculum studies. In 2004, with changes in the nation's higher education policies, the university was incorporated as a national university and established its present administrative structure.

Campus

In 1949, approximately three Normal Schools were merged to form Tokyo Gakugei University, which continues this day. The three schools were Tokyo First Normal School, Tokyo Second Normal School, and Tokyo Third Normal School. Tokyo First Normal School was established from Tokyo Prefectural Aoyama Normal School, Tokyo Second Normal School from Tokyo Prefectural Toshima Normal School, and Tokyo Third Normal School from Tokyo Prefectural Oizumi Normal School.

The historical reason why Tokyo Gakugei University only had a campus in Koganei was due to the air raid on the campus in Ikebukuro. Due to the efforts to save lives and carry important documents, there were no casualties among the staff and students, and important documents such as school registers were spared from being destroyed by fire.

When the school was rebuilt, it was natural to consider rebuilding the campus in Ikebukuro, but it was not easy to construct a school building in the immediate aftermath of the war, and the first priority was to find a school building that would be open for classes. Thus, the decision was made to move to the site of the former Army's Third Technical Research Institute in Koganei.

It is open to the public. Tokyo Gakugei University has a long tradition and a lot of achievements as an educational institution, playing an important role in research for education and teaching training for a long time. The affiliated library has been dedicated to collecting educational resources for teacher training and education. It has approximately 910,000 books and 12,000 titles of magazines and other materials now. In particular, it tries to hold collections of precise educational materials such as Mochizuki Bunko, which includes old books and textbooks for elementary school in the Meiji period. It has been collecting comprehensive textbooks and curriculum manuals for Japan’s postwar elementary, junior high, and high schools.

Organization

Tokyo Gakugei University has a lot of organizations. The university has 15 research centers, 12 attached schools and the mutual benefit society.

Schools and Graduate Schools [school] This university has only a department of education, divided into two categories: “school education” and “Education Specialist Course” The School Education Course is divided into four classifications: A) Elementary School Education B) Secondary School Education C) Special Needs Education D) School Health Care and Education. These programs train students to become professional teachers in one of four specialisms of their choice. Upon completion of the course, students receive a teaching qualification for a specific department and subject. This course is suitable for those who plan to work as school teachers in the future. The Education Specialist Course provides a training program for those who intend to become school support staff members. School supporters work in cooperation with schoolteachers and the local government. This course also provides training for those who wish to become curators or educational staff members at museums, theaters or libraries, and for those who wish to help solve educational problems worldwide.

[Graduate school] The purpose of Tokyo Gakugei University's Graduate School of Education is to cultivate the outstanding practical classroom skills or research ability necessary for students to become highly skilled professionals in the education field or leading educational researchers. Students pursue these goals through educational and research activities underpinned by a humanist and scientific mindset, building on the liberal arts and specialist education acquired in undergraduate programs. The Graduate School of Education is made up of the Professional Degree Program of the Graduate School of Teacher Education, which offers one major (Advanced Studies on Transforming Educational Practice), comprising five programs and 17 subprograms, and the Master's Course, offering two majors (Next -Generation Japanese Education System Research and Development, and Cooperation and Practice Development for Educational Specialists), comprising three programs each . The objective of the Graduate School of Education Master's Course is to focus on cutting-edge themes that will be indispensable for society from now on, and to reappraise their content from an educational perspective. Such themes include globalism, educational AI (artificial intelligence), clinical psychology, and educational cooperation, all of which are needed to guide the education of the next generation. At the same time, the graduate school aims to cultivate educators and researchers who combine expertise in those themes with mastery of a comprehensive range of new skills.

The objective of the Major in Advanced Studies on Transforming Educational Practice is to train teachers who can serve as "school leaders" for educational activities in schools and local communities. Such teachers should demonstrate advanced practical teaching skills and be able to cooperate with faculty members, parents or guardians, local residents, and experts to solve problems during the teaching of curricula and during initiatives to address present-day educational challenges.

[The United Graduate School of Education (Doctoral Course)] The mission of the United Graduate School of Education is to make a contribution toward the systematic advancement of the interdisciplinary sciences in the field of education. The main focuses are on the curriculum and on the processes of teaching and learning at all age levels and in a variety of educational settings. The Graduate School provides students with the professional training programs useful in educational colleges or universities. Our program involves four universities in the Tokyo metropolitan area: Tokyo Gakugei, Saitama, Chiba, and Yokohama National. TGU plays the administrative role in the program, which is composed of independent courses.

・Explayground “Explayground” is a coined word of “Experiment,” “Expand,” “Extreme” and “Playground.” This means the environment where learning and playing are connected. Participants bring the topics they are interested in, make groups called “Lab” with other participants, and learn in this “Explayground” project. This project aims to create a mode of a new type of education, such as creative research and development.

Teaching and degrees

Tokyo Gakugei University's curriculum has the three categories "liberal arts subjects," "basic education subjects," and "major subjects."

Liberal arts subjects are for the purpose of acquiring refined culture and basic skills. They have the three fields "general arts and sciences," "health and sports" and "language."

Basic education subjects are for the purpose of fostering basic education abilities and enhancing practical skills. These comprise six fields in the teacher training course including "significance of the teaching profession" and "teaching practice."
