The new Demio (branded as "Mazda 2" in other markets), is a complete overhaul of the previous model, moving the car from the MPV category to that of a hatchback. Mazda's Zoom-Zoom philosophy and pursuit of weight saving earned the car the World Car Of The Year award in 2008. The new design debuted at the Geneva motor show in 2007.[1].

The Mazda2 is built on Mazda's new DE platform, which with amendment, Ford has also used for the Ford Fiesta. For example, the 2008 Fiesta substitutes the 1.35 and 1.5 MZR engines with Duratec Sigma Engines.

Unlike the previous Mazda2 which was made in Valencia, Spain, this model is only manufactured in Hiroshima and Hofu, Japan [1].

Since 2008, the sedan version of the Demio ("Mazda2劲翔" in Simplified Chinese) has been in production for the Chinese market by Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co., Ltd. at its Nanjing plant. [2], [3]

As well as the sedan version available in China, a three-door hatchback version is available in European and Australian markets. [4].

Drive Train and Platform[edit]

The new platform is composed of light weight, ultra-high tensile steel and features an updated drive train. 1.3L and 1.5L MZR engines are available, coupled with either; a five speed manual, a four speed automatic, a CVT or a seven speed selective CVT.[citation needed] Automatics are not available in all markets. 1.4L and 1.6L Diesels are also available. In the Japanese market, a miller cycle is also available on the 1.35L.

A primary goal to help improve the drive experience and improve the economy of the vehicle was to reduce unnecessary weight from the chassis, drive train and interior. Examples including reducing the shell by 22 Kg, the suspension by 13 Kg and interior speakers by 1 Kg.[5]

Rumours exist of an MPS (MazdaSpeed) version being produced, however, it has not been officially announced.[6]
