Jürgen Ehlers (born 2 May 1948 in Hamburg in Germany) is a geographer and an award-winning writer. He became generally known through his crime novels and short stories.

Biography

Jürgen Ehlers grew up in Hamburg, where he took his Abitur in 1968. He studied Geography at the University of Hamburg and went on to do a PhD on “The Quaternary morphogenesis of the Harburg Hills and their surroundings”. He works for the Geological Survey of Hamburg[1], where he is in charge of geological mapping. His specialist fields are Quaternary Research and Coastal Morphology. Jürgen Ehlers collaborated with fellow geologist Phil Gibbard from the University of Cambridge on the INQUA project “Extent and Chronology of Quaternary Glaciations”[2]. The textbook "Das Eiszeitalter"[3] was published in 2011.

In 1992 Jürgen Ehlers’ first crime story was published. Since then many of his short stories have come out in anthologies and journals, some also in English. His first historical crime novel "Mitgegangen"[4] was published in 2005. In 2005 Jürgen Ehlers was awarded the prestigious Friedrich Glauser Prize[5] for "Weltspartag in Hamminkeln"[6] (World Savings Day in Hamminkeln) in the category of best short story. He is a member of the Crime Writers’ Association[7]. Jürgen Ehlers lives with his family near Hamburg.
