Nakaya Ukichiro Museum of Snow and Ice (中谷宇吉郎雪の科学館, なかやうきちろうゆきのかがくかん）is a museum introducing research by Ukichiro Nakaya on snow and ice. It is located in Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture.

General Information[edit]

Ukichi Nakawa, a professor in Hokkaido University Faculty of Science, was originally from Township of Katayamazu, Enuma District (currently a part of Kaga City), Ishikawa Prefecture. He is well known for he's research on ice and snowflakes. To commemorate his accomplishment, Museum of Snow and Ice was established and opened on Nov. 1, 1994.  It is located nearby Lake Shibayama and Katayamazu Hot Spring. The building was designed my Arata Isozaki.

The museum has various resource and multimedia exhibitions on snow and ice. Also the visitors can participate small experiments on snow and ice. The main exhibition is about Nakaya's accomplishments and his personal life. A calligraphy with his own words "Snow　Crystals are Letters from Heaven" is displayed. Various other activities include kids scientist, lectures, concerts, and photo exhibitions are also organized.

Visitor information[edit]

  • Open at 9:00 and closes at 17:00. Last admission at 16:30.
  • Closes on Wednesday (open if it is a holiday) and year-end and new year holidays.
  • Admission fee: adult 500 yen, senior citizens (75 or older): 250 yen. Free for high school students or younger and people with disabilities. 

Access[edit]

  • Nearest JR station is Kaga Onsen Station of Hokuriku Line JR West. Several bus line operates to the museum.  It is recommended to check the bus schedule before visiting.
  • Kaga Onsen Bus from the station of for Ishikawa Hospital (15 min).
  • Take Canbus (city bus) Sea Shore line from the station. Note that outbound takes 55 min. Inbound (return) takes 25 min.
  • Take Canbus Komatsu Airport line for the station. 15 min both ways.
