Aram Mohammad Nuri Abdulmohammad, known as Aram Mala Nuri,[a] (born February 25, 1989) is an Iraqi Kurdish activist, journalist and civic leader. He has actively taken part in numerous movements aimed at holding the government accountable for public services and infrastructure projects. Through advocacy, he has become an effective voice for people, consistently fighting for better living conditions, services, healthcare, and public welfare. Some of his notable activities are: he was one of the organizers of February 25th demonstration, leader of the campaign of breaking water meters in 2022, his continuous protest demanding a better health condition in his hometown. His continuous present in voicing people’s demands has caused him numerous death threats and attacks.
Activism
[edit]Aram Mala Nuri has been an active advocate for social justice and improved living conditions in Iraqi Kurdistan. His activism began on September 7, 2005, when he participated in the first public demonstration against the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) since its establishment, highlighting corruption and poor basic services. He later organized protests in Kalar, including a notable demonstration on February 17th, 2011, along with advocating for public rights, it was symbolizing nonviolence with “Peace Belts” and criticizing the government for using violence to cease the demonstration in Sulaymaniyah on February 25th, 2011, including torturing and killing its own citizens. Alongside his activism, Aram engaged in humanitarian efforts, working with arche noVa in refugee camps from 2016 to 2020 and contributing to the “White Food” project in 2019, which aided 1,000 families during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, he led a campaign against government-imposed electricity and water meters, a move that resonated with widespread dissatisfaction over rising living costs and inadequate services.
Death threats and attacks
[edit]Nuri’s involvement in criticizing and taking civil actions against the government led him numerous death threats and eventually on February 26th of 2022 he was attacked by an unknown group. On February 25th, 2011, Aram was on of the leaders and organizer of a demonstration in Kalar that aimed at demanding public services along with criticizing the government for using violence to cease the demonstration in Sulaymaniyah on February 17th, 2011. He with other demonstrators wore white belts called ‘Peace Belt’ symbolizing nonviolence and peace. At that protest, he was stabbed by an unknown individuals.
According to a report by CPT_Peacemaker Team on April 11th 2022, which they ‘met with civil activist Aram after he was seriously injured in an attack by an unidentified perpetrators following a series of the threats he received following his continuous and persistent activism work,’ including being imprisoned and being stabbed by anonymous people in protests. In the report, they mentioned those death threats connected to his activities including participating in the demonstrations and activities against Kurdish regional government which was against poor road conditions from Kalar to Sulaymaniyah, actively taking part in social media and local protests about the meters_calling people to break the new electricity and water meters in January 2022, criticizing KRG for rising living costs and lack of basic services such as electricity, poor condition of schools and medical services.
As a consequence of his activism on those actions mentioned above he has received death threats following his activities that eventually led him to be attacked to death on February 26th, 2022 by perpetrators that were so professional they did not leave any evidence.They stabbed him 17 times, leaving him with sever wounds. Up to this point, the people behind that action has not been discovered yet and Aram is receiving death threats to cease his activities. After all as CPT states, The KRG has a history of suppressing public criticism, restricting free speech, and violating human rights, including threatening and killing its own citizens.
