Branding versus Banding

Bird banding is an American English term for Bird ringing. The idea is that a metal ring (American English - a metal band) is used with details engraved in it. Branding interestingly is also used for marking animals, and especially in the livestock context is associated with applying hot or cold metal to skin (exactly as your veterinary text says !) - a term never used for the poor little birds.
