Image Copyright Confusion[edit]

The advice that you were given at Wikipedia:Village pump (assistance)#Image Copyright Confusion looks pretty good. Also, if you are concerned about commercial reuse, upload the images at 72 dpi, which is okay for the internet, but the only way that the image then is usable for newspaper or magazine use is as a thumbnail.

If you have any problems with creating a Gallery section for the Long Beach Grand Prix article, contact me. Just to let you know, I moved and shrunk the one image that you added to that article. Using such as large size as you did in an article creates problems for people viewing the article at 800x600 screen resolution. The guidelines on images in articles is evolving, but in general, its best to use the "thumb" attribute without specifying the size. When specifying the size becomes especially useful is for panorama photos (for example, see the photo at the bottom of Santa Catalina Island, California). BlankVerse 09:40, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The hard-coded width for images are usually not more than 350 px, which is roughly 1/2 the width of an article at 600x600 (because of the sidebar in the default Wikipedia skin). The Wikipedia:Image use policy says 550 px, but that ends up with a very narrow band of text if the image is thumbnailed. General practice on the Wikipedia is to rarely hard-code an image width greater than 350-400 px. 550 px, in my opinion, should only be used if the image is framed instead of thumbnailed (so text doesn't 'flow' around the graphic). Images on the Wikipedia, however, are rarely framed instead of thumbnailed.
Also, photos are usually not the first things that you should see in an article. There should be a relatively short intro at the very top. If there is an image at the top of an article, it should be a very representative picture for the topic of the article, which is thumbnailed to the right of the intro text. The image should be simple, so the graphic is much like an icon. For example, for the Champ Car Atlantic Championship, if there is any graphic at the top, it should probably be the logo for the series, or a static image of a series racecar with a very uncluttered background.
Keep in mind that the Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. It is not a magazine. Also, it is targeted at the general audience, and not the hard-core fans of a particular topic. That means that images (and text) needs are different. Images should be for helping the article they are placed on, and should be as informative as possible.
For more help and suggestions, you might also think about contacting WikiProject Automobiles, Wikipedia:WikiProject Motorsport, or any of the daughter projects of WikiProject:Motorsport such as Wikipedia:WikiProject American Open Wheel Racing.
One place to start for discussions in usually at a top level like Wikipedia:Village pump (assistance) , or Wikipedia:Village pump (policy) (if you are proposing a change in policy). The other place would be directly on the talk page for the Wikipedia Policy or guideline that you are interested in. For Wikipedia:Image use policy, you would discuss matters at Wikipedia talk:Image use policy.
For spell-checking, many Wikipedia editors use the Google toolbar. You can also use the Mozilla Firefox browser with the Spellbound extension added (or the beta v.2.0 version of Firefox, which comes with the spellchecking built in). BlankVerse 22:29, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Atlanticlogo.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:Atlanticlogo.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 23:11, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:2007CCWSlogo.jpg}[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:2007CCWSlogo.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Orphaned non-free media (Image:2007CCWSlogo.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:2007CCWSlogo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:27, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
