Carters

[edit]

I hate tagging new articles which have been extensively worked on by someone who knows much more about the subject than I do. There are a couple of things about Carters Coach Services that I thought I would bring to your attention:
1. Under Services you state that "Anglian provides an important link". Do you mean Carters? If not, what is Anglian?
2. There are no references, and yet the information is very detailed. You must have a source for this.
3. Although I can't add information for the question marks, it is probably a more professional look to leave a blank, a dash, or state as "unknown", whichever serves the purpose best, and allow future editors to upgrade the data.
4. Would the text logo I posted be better to have yellow text rather than red?
5. I have clipped your picture to give a better closeup of the bus.
.Secondarywaltz (talk) 18:08, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for raising these points.

What did you mean by tagging? I did mean Carters and have changed it Could you make this website a reference please: http://www.suffolkonboard.com/ I will think about the question marks The text logo is greast, how did you make that? If you can make it yellow go for it

Chris0693 (talk) 08:30, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I tagged it with "This article does not cite any references or sources", but I feel that you must have a source for this - you're not just making it up. The web site you indicate for Suffolk County Council does not give this sort of background for Carters and therefore is not a direct reference for the article. Is there a specific Carters Coach Services web site? I have not yet done a full search on my own. -~~
No there isn't a website. I suppose you could put this http://www.ipswichbus.co.uk/fleetlists/carters/ but I didnt really use any other sources, the Suffolk County Council website gave the service information, so if you could put that in as well please? Proposed deletion of Apeldoorn Osseveld railway station

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Apeldoorn Osseveld railway station, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Non-notable railway station.

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Huge handbook for creating previous/next templates!

[edit]

Hi Chris,

I just wrote you a small guideline for creating preceding/following station templates. Except that it is not small anymore, but ah well... If you've got any more questions: feel free to ask, although I don't think my knowledge on this subject extends beyond what I wrote here. :-)

The templates with preceding/following station information are based on lines. So, each line needs a seperate template. If we take as an example the template for line E which you can find on the page Nootdorp RandstadRail station, you see the following text which 'loads' the template:

{ {s-rail-start}}
{ {s-rail|title=RandstadRail}}
{ {s-line|system=RandstadRail|line=E|previous=Pijnacker Centrum|next=Leidschenveen}}
{ {end}}

(Obviously, you should remove the space between the first and second "{" for this to work).

The second line contains information about the entire 'box', so "title=RandstadRail" does not really do anything except place that title in the table heading and turn it into a link. Boring. ;-)

The third line is more interesing. The phrase after "system" defines in which category all templates should be placed, in this case Category:RandstadRail templates (because "system=RandstadRail"). Another example is Category:Thalys templates for when "system=Thalys".

If you have decided on the name, then make that category (Category:****NAME**** templates). Each template you are going to create should be placed in this new category by using "noinclude" as follows:

< noinclude>Category:****NAME**** templates< /noinclude>

Now, create these three templates:

  • Template:****NAME**** color (so NOT "colour", that does not work)
    • In this template you define the color to be used in the two little boxes per line (blue in the example of Nootdorp RandstadRail station). If you want all lines to be the same color, then just enter that color and be done with it. If you want each line to have a different color, then you have to be a little more creative: just steal the code from the template Template:RandstadRail color and replace the FIRST part (3/RR3/4/RR4/E/Erasmuslijn) with the line number or the line letter you are going to use, and the SECOND part (after the "=") with the appropriate color.
  • Template:****NAME**** lines
    • In this template, you will define how each line should be called in the table. Check the RandstadRail example at Template:RandstadRail lines. For RandstadRail stations, I want the text "Line E (RET)" to be shown whenever "line=E", and for example "Line RR3 (HTM)" whenever "line=3" or "line=RR3" (3 and RR3 are the same thing, so other Wiki users might not use the one I have anticipated upon; therefore I simply created both). Also note that the template code shows a line with "#default"! In other words, whenever a line number is used which is not 'programmed' (for example "line=1234567"), then it still knows how it should be formatted.
  • Template:****NAME**** stations
    • This one basically does the same as the lines template, but then for the station. It defines what should be shown for a specific station, making sure that for example "previous=Nootdorp" and "next=Nootdorp" are to be translated to a link: Nootdorp. The RandstadRail example is REALLY complicated here (because of the existence of two different stations with the same name on different lines, which I wanted an automatic check on - silly, really), so I'm going to show the shortened version of it (which is probably enough for most situations):
{ {#switch:{{{station}}}
 | #default=[[{{{station}}} RandstadRail station|{{{station}}}]]
 } }
} }
    • These lines of text take as input what you've given them as a station name, and turning that into a link by adding "RandstadRail station" to the link. If you are creating a page for a Dutch railway station (and probably those of most other countries as well), you simply replace "RandstadRail" with railway, because the Wikipedia articles on those stations are all called "NameOfTheStation railway station". So, do make sure that there is a system in the naming of station articles (or create a bunch of redirects).

The last templates you have to create are "left" and "right" templates for EACH line. Call those "Template:S-line/****NAME**** left/1234567" and "Template:S-line/****NAME**** right/1234567", where you include the proper name, and replace "1234567" by the correct line number or the line letter. These templates are easy, as you only include the left and right terminuses of the lines, in plain and simple text (so no links, because the station template you've just created will do that for you).

The final step is to include the text as you see above in each station article. Of course, replace the "title=RandstadRail" with some nice title, replace the "system=RandstadRail" with the category name you have come up with, replace "line=E" with the proper line letter, and include the correct previous and next stations. Finally, you can multiple the third line (starting with "s-line") so multiple lines are displayed in one box (see for example Forepark RandstadRail station).

Also browse around how templates for other rail systems have been created, for example in Category:Thalys templates or Category:London Underground templates. They just might give you some nice ideas! As you can see with the London Underground templates, the category name (London Underground) and template names (LUL) are different; apparently this is possible, but I would get confused. :-)

Cheers and good luck with 'em! Bicycle bell 16:38, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

And the only other problem I see me encountering when the trains split somewhere.

Thanks for your help, if you could just start me off I hope then I can do it.

Thanks Chris0693 (talk) 21:42, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Started off :-)

[edit]

Hi,

I've just created some templates to begin with, and made it work for the 1600 and 3500 Intercities and the 5700 Stoptrein. I split the whole story into two parts: one part for the Intercity trains, and another part for Sprinter trains (also with Stoptrein and Sneltrein templates, but those are mainly redirecting to Sprinter and Intercity templates). This makes maintenance a bit more difficult, but I like the result better, since we can now give Intercities and Sprinters different colors and captions!

If we take Amsterdam Zuid station as an example with series 1600, 3500 and 5700, the following code:

{ {s-rail-start}}
{ {s-rail|title=Nederlandse Spoorwegen}}
{ {s-line|system=NS Intercity|line=1600|previous=Schiphol|next=Duivendrecht}}
{ {s-line|system=NS Intercity|line=3500|previous=Schiphol|next=Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA}}
{ {s-line|system=NS Stoptrein|line=5700|previous=Schiphol|next=Amsterdam RAI}}
{ {end}}

now generates, when you remove the spaces of course, the following beautiful box:

Preceding station Nederlandse Spoorwegen Following station
Schiphol NS Intercity 1600 Duivendrecht
towards Enschede
NS Intercity 3500 Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA
towards Venlo
Schiphol
towards Hoofddorp
NS Sprinter 5700 Amsterdam RAI

For this to work, I've created several templates in the newly created category Category:Nederlandse Spoorwegen templates (take a look!). As you can see, for each train type (Intercity/Sneltrein/Stoptrein/Sprinter) there are THREE templates to begin with: "color", "lines", and "stations". If you like what you see above, then you don't have to ever touch those again. ;-) If not, read this:

  • LINES template. I chose not to turn the train series number into an article link, as I don't think it has any added value to write a Wikipedia article about every single train series. If you think otherwise and you DO want it to become a link, you should change all four "lines" templates by replacing text "Intercity {{{1}}}" (or "Sprinter {{{1}}}" or whatever) with a link. Bear in mind that the code "{{{1}}}" stands for whatever the input is after "line=" (in this case 1600 / 3500 / 5700), so always leave the "{{{1}}}" part alone. For the intercity template (but also change the other three!), the entire line with the link should probably become:
| #default=[[NS Intercity {{{1}}}]]
  • COLOR template. There are actually only two instead of four "color" templates: Intercity and Sprinter. This is because I've created a redirect from the Sneltrein-color and Stoptrein-color templates, so now Intercity and Sneltrein share a color (blue), and Sprinter and Stoptrein also share a color (yellow). If you don't like this, then simply steal the entire code from the Intercity-color or Sprinter-color template, paste it into the Sneltrein-color or Stoptrein-color template, and of course change the HEX code of the color into something you like.
  • STATIONS template. Since all station names are the same for each train type (of course), ALL four train-type-station templates redirect to one other template, which I called "Template:Nederlandse Spoorwegen stations". You only have to ever touch this one template if you want to add exceptions to the basic rule, but the basic rule is fine the way it is: if you give "Duivendrecht" as input, it automatically creates a link to "Duivendrecht railway station". Those exceptions might occur if Dutch stations share their name with foreign stations (which they do, but for all of those stations - Deurne, Haren, Soest, and Zwijndrecht from the top of my head - Wikipedia still only has an article about the Dutch station and not about the foreign one).

Now, on to create two templates for each and every train series!! This is going to be a lot more work, but also much, much simpler. For each series, you have to make one "left" AND one "right" template. Just copy the entire code of one of the templates I've created (for example "Template:S-line/NS Intercity left/1600") and create a new template with the same name (replacing only the train type and the number) and of course replace the station in that template with the station it should be. Do bear in mind that you use the proper train type (IC/Sn/St/Sp) in the name of the template!

The final step, when you have created enough templates for a station, is to put the box on the Wiki page of that station. To do so, you simply have to paste the code to make those boxes into the station article, and change four things for each line: "system=" (for the train type), "line=" (for the number), and obviously "previous=" and "next=".

That is all! I hope I've given you a decent head start, but feel free to ask if you still have some trouble!! I'm not going to create templates for all train series, but if you want for example to change a color or to make the train series into a link and you don't get it, just ask. :-) Have fun! Branches

[edit]

Hi Chris,

You seem to have gotten the hang of it, it's looking good. :-) Your question about trains which go different places is a good one, I forgot about that. Luckily I've used them in the past, so I've created the templates for the 700 Intercity for you.

First of all let me tell you that some difficulties arise because the "stations" template automatically creates a link to a Wiki article about that station. Therefore, an input such as "Groningen/Leeuwarden" would've resulted in a link to the non-existing article "Groningen/Leeuwarden railway station". To deal with this issue, I had to create some exceptions in the stations template, which you can see for yourself if you edit the Template:Nederlandse Spoorwegen stations template, so take a look! I already included some other combinations of stations you might need, such as Den Haag C/Rotterdam C. It is important that you use the exact same notation as I did when writing the template, if you don't it won't work!! I think it is easy enough to add more exceptions if that might be necessary: just copy and paste one of the lines and type in the stations.

Then, how does it work? Well, on the combined section of the train (between Schiphol and Zwolle), there is no difference at all. Just enter "line=700" and everything else you'd normally enter, and then "Groningen/Leeuwarden" will appear as destination. For all stations after Zwolle, you have to add "|branch=???????" directly after "line=700". I've chosen to use the train number as branch number, so the train to Groningen will be "|branch=700", while the train to Leeuwarden will be "|branch=10700".

For the station of Assen (with branch=700), this code:

{ {s-rail-start}}
{ {s-rail|title=Nederlandse Spoorwegen}}
{ {s-line|system=NS Intercity|line=700|branch=700|previous=Beilen|next=Haren}}
{ {end}}

now generates:

Preceding station Nederlandse Spoorwegen Following station
Beilen NS Intercity 700
700
Haren
towards Groningen

For the station of Heerenveen (with branch=10700), this code:

{ {s-rail-start}}
{ {s-rail|title=Nederlandse Spoorwegen}}
{ {s-line|system=NS Intercity|line=700|branch=10700|previous=Wolvega|next=Akkrum}}
{ {end}}

now generates:

Preceding station Nederlandse Spoorwegen Following station
Wolvega NS Intercity 700
10700
Akkrum
towards Groningen

And for the station of Hilversum (with no branch code at all), this code:

{ {s-rail-start}}
{ {s-rail|title=Nederlandse Spoorwegen}}
{ {s-line|system=NS Intercity|line=700|previous=Duivendrecht|next=Amersfoort}}
{ {end}}

now generates:

Preceding station Nederlandse Spoorwegen Following station
Duivendrecht NS Intercity 700 Amersfoort
towards Groningen

Since there is only one "left" terminus for this train (which is Schiphol), you will understand that the "left/700" template is completely normal. But now take a look in the "right/700" template, so click edit. Since we have two branches and one shared section, the template will have to distinguish between those three options. See how if you have entered "branch=700" it will give Groningen as output, if you have entered "branch=10700" it will say Leeuwarden, and if you have entered anything else or nothing at all, it will result in Groningen/Leeuwarden.

Now you can just copy and paste the code of that template to use for other trains which split somewhere. If something goes wrong, do remember to check whether the stations template already has an exception to deal with the combination of two stations.

On a final note I have to say that the software includes the possibility to add some text below "NS Intercity 700" when a branch has been entered. However, I found it a bit confusing and also redundant, because the terminus already distinguishes between the branches. Besides, if it says "NS Intercity 700, branch 700" I doubt whether that is useful. If you think otherwise then let me know, because I can include it (any text is possible for each different branch, so it is not necessarily the number).

Good luck again! :-) Bicycle bell (talk) Bicycle bell 08:46, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Branches part 2 and NS Hispeed

[edit]

Hi,

I see you already got the 700 working at several stations. I redid Zwolle railway station for you, and also added the template for Steenwijk railway station (which is in the branch=10700 area of course).

Furthermore, I added the train type "NS Hispeed". It has a dirty pinkish color (copied that from the NS Hispeed logo), and to use it you have to replace "system=NS Intercity" or whatever with "system=NS Hispeed". I created the templates for the 1000 series (Fyra between Amsterdam C and Rotterdam C), and implemented it at the Schiphol railway station page.

Cheers. :-) Bicycle bell (talk) Bicycle bell 09:27, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Schiphol

[edit]

Hi,

Of course you can show "Schiphol (Amsterdam Airport)", that's no problem. You have two options:

  • If you want to show the long version only for train 140 (and maybe a few other international trains, but not for all trans) the easiest solution is to create a new article called Schiphol (Amsterdam Airport) railway station and turn that article into a redirect page to Schiphol railway station. Then you can just enter the long version wherever you want to, and the short version wherever you want to. To establish this redirect page, create the new Schiphol (Amsterdam Airport) railway station article and enter only this one single line (but do remove the space between the two ['s!):
#REDIRECT[ [Schiphol railway station]]
  • If you want the long version to always show up instead of the short version (i.e. for all trains!) you have to add an exception to Template:Nederlandse Spoorwegen stations looking like this (again, remove the space between the two ['s!):
| Schiphol=[ [Schiphol railway station|Schiphol (Amsterdam Airport)]]

That's all again. ;-) Bicycle bell (talk) Bicycle bell 20:00, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

German railway task force

[edit]

Hi Chris, first of all thank you for all your work on German railway articles. May I invite you to join our Rail transport in Germany task force - no specific commitment is necessary other than taking an interest in the subject! If you'd like to do this please add your name to the list of contributors - you already deserve to be recognised - and add any new articles you create to the What's New section. Just a small point; the convention is that we name station articles as "XXX station" rather than "XXX railway station". If you feel strongly about that you may wish to start a discussion, but you should avoid moving any articles until a new convention is agreed. BTW if you are you a translator or are interested in other aspects of Germany, there is also a WikiProject Germany. Gruß. --Bermicourt (talk) 05:53, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Chris, there is no universal convention for naming stations on Wiki. French articles use "Gare de XXX"; US ones "XXX (Amtrak)". The reason for just using "station" is a) that's how the International Union of Railways translates Bahnhof. It's also appears to be the norm in dictionaries where the primary meaning of "station" is "railway station". German station articles at least have a convention which we should follow unless we collectively agree to change. More illogical, but also more contentious is the de facto practice of not translating Hauptbahnhof. This is odd when we translate Bahnhof, but folk couldn't agree on whether it should be rendered "main station" or "central station". My own view is that "central station" is normal in English-speaking countries, but if a given station was obviously not central, we could translate it, by exception, as "main station". It is not uncommon for a German word to have more than English equivalent depending on context e.g. a Schloss may be a castle, palace or [manor] house. The joys of translation! Regards. --Bermicourt (talk) 18:59, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

French railways

[edit]

Hi Chris, I suppose you figured out yourself how to do the Narbonne junction, it was correct when I checked. I added the minor railway to Bize-Minervois. I will check for missing stations etc. later, when I write the article about the railway (unless you want to do it yourself). About links to stations, I'm a bit in doubt there. I think you're doing a nice job creating articles about railway stations, but I don't think every station is notable. I have created quite a few station articles myself, but only for large towns or otherwise important stations (junctions, intercity stops), and I've received some comments on that (none of them was deleted though). See also Wikipedia:Notability (Railway lines and stations)#Stations suggestion. Anyway, I won't change your links for now. Regards, Markussep Talk 18:24, 22 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chris, what you're doing looks OK to me. As I said, if I were you I would focus on the main stations, but go ahead anyway ;-) I've been struggling with what to show in articles about stations too, for instance if there's a TER connection between Limoges and Clermont-Ferrand, is that a TER Limousin or a TER Auvergne service. I chose to pick one, and not to show both. BTW could you rename your "history" sections to something more appropriate, like "services" or "location"? "history" only applies when you're writing about when the station was opened, closed, rebuilt, etc. The Orleans-Montauban railway (as part of the Paris-Toulouse connection) was on my to-do list, I just started working on the {{Orléans-Montauban railway diagram}}. Markussep Talk 09:39, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I completed the {{Carcassonne-Rivesaltes railway diagram}}. I represented the demolished part with a LUECKE icon, that seemed appropriate. Since the part between Saint-Martin-Lys and Rivesaltes is used for tourist trains and/or freight, I thought it best to use red for the line, but pink for the (virtually) unused stations. Markussep Talk 12:58, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
According to Géoportail and Google Maps (satellite view) the line is still present between Saint-Martin-Lys and Axat, but maybe traffic ends in Axat. I can't help you very much with the Bayonne–Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port railway, since it's younger than my main references (1869). I think for a minor railway you've given enough detail in the article. Markussep Talk 15:09, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see you have a S-line box ready at Interlaken Ost. I fixed one little error (don't put the # in front of the color code). Is there anything else you need fixed? I have no idea whether the Swiss railways use line numbers. They use numbers for trains, but it would be silly to show separate lines for the dozens of daily trains to Luzern, for instance. Another piece of advice: if you're going to create several "systems" for Switzerland, you could redirect the "XXX stations" templates to a central one (for instance {{SBB-CFF-FFS stations}}) in which you can make switches for "irregular" article titles, like I did at {{TER stations}}. Markussep Talk 18:07, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's quite easy, you got the SBB almost right. Just do the same for {{BLS color}} etc. (you'll see the templates as red links below the edit box of the station you're working on), you can look up the right hues here: Web colors. If you want to know how to work with the templates, this helps: {{S-line}}. And feel free to ask me. Markussep Talk 22:39, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

French Railways - Train Services

[edit]

Hi Chris, Some questions ref the detailed services info.

1. Presumably if a line connects say 12 stations then the info re that line must be included in each of the 12 different station articles. Hence if something changes then 12 articles need updating.
2. Is the intention to build up a historic record of the different services as they evolve over time or just have a record of the situation on a particular date?
3. I was wondering why the services are not pulled out into specific articles so that further info re the route could be included such as when it opened, geographical features etc (I am not a train expert but I hope you understand the sentiment of this question) and each station article can then link to a single accurate evolving article. Updating is much easier and a historical record could also be built up.

Thanks, Boatman (talk) 18:42, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Boatman,
Firstly if you could tell me which line you are referring to specifically so that I can explain it a bit better for you that would be great.
The services across Europe are now generally all interlinked, so the major timetable changes all happen at the same time. Generally there are two main periods in the year, the December - May and May - December timetable, so around that time the information gets changed on the articles, which can take some time. The individual services generally aren't recorded unless they are a special service, such as the Orient Express or the Eurostar etc.
Regarding your 3rd point, it is the railway line that has an article created, rather than the services that operate. If you want an example I would suggest the Toulouse-Bayonne railway.

I hope this helps, I'm not sure I've explained it that well, so don't hesitate to ask questions!

Chris0693 (talk) 09:49, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chris, Still having some concerns. First is (I hope) is a practical point. Unless I am missing something the details of the 'routes' are repeated verbatim in each article which gives a huge edit/consistency/workload problem when something changes in the future. Use of templates would resolve this. eg Someone may think that it would be a good idea to insert in brackets the distance to the next stop/station or the 'material' changes. Use of a template means one edit and the info is automatically in each article.
Second point is that in the 'notes' field/column random notes are appearing relating to train times. I suggest that these are deleted because they can never be kept up to date and are not appropriate to an encyclopedia. An external link to the French timetable/booking site would be much more use to the reader and always up to date.

S-line templates

[edit]

Hi Chris, I saw you didn't use the line number functionality at your recent article creations in Bourgogne. You even removed it at your edit to Nevers station. If you're not sure how to use it, or which numbers and termini apply, just ask me. Markussep Talk 09:36, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A common convention is to put the northern or western terminus left, and the southern or eastern one right. I haven't done that very consistently (for instance for Bourgogne I started using the capital Dijon as the central point on the left side), but I do so for the new ones. Leaving Nevers in the left direction, do you mean towards the west? It doesn't really matter, as long as the information is correct. I created the Paris-Marseille diagram like this on purpose, otherwise the diagram gets incredibly long. You can get an idea of how long it gets by expanding the 5 light blue subdiagrams. See French wikipedia for some (IMO horrible) examples. If you want to create railway articles, go ahead. If you don't feel confident about 19th century French sources you can leave the history sections to me. Markussep Talk 15:00, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed the Nevers-Chagny issues. When I'm not sure about a junction I look it up in www.geoportail.fr (maps) and when I know how the junction is built (usually I simplify them a bit), I search the correct icons in categories like this one in Commons. I don't really know about new developments of the SNCF. Markussep Talk 16:35, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed the Thalys template (see the Bourg-St-M article), you can use "Neige" for the line. I created Eurostar templates, the left destination is always London, you can use "type2" for the right destination (Brussels-South, Paris-Nord, Bourg-Saint-Maurice, Avignon, Marne-la-Vallée). Markussep Talk 18:33, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think this {{Amsterdam-Schiphol railway diagram}} is correct now, as far as I could see at Google Maps. That was a difficult one ;-) I didn't bother to add the metro line, that would have made it even nicer. I'm Dutch BTW. Markussep Talk 16:41, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, I took the line to the old Hem bridge for the line to the Hem tunnel to Zaandam. I'll fix it later. Markussep Talk 16:45, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think I've got it now, the Sloterdijk station on the Hemboog was difficult! Markussep Talk 18:32, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Paris RER

[edit]

Ehm, some comments about your Gare Aéroport Charles de Gaulle 1 RER edits: it's not a good idea to create a new article when there is already an article about the same subject. The naming convention for RER stations is "X (Paris RER)", except when the station is also used by regular trains (Transilien, TER or other), then we use "Gare de X". I just saw that you moved nearly all of the RER stations. Better discuss it before you introduce a new standard name.

If you're sure that no trains from Charles de Gaulle take the branch line to Robinson, you can change the "type2" field into "B4" instead of "both". But I checked it on the RATP website, and they do. I don't think it's very useful to show all the different options for the RER lines, some trains skip a few stations, or serve only part of the line. I think for the B line alone there are more than 20 variants. Markussep Talk 09:24, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Gare du Nord

[edit]

Chris, your recent move of Gare du Nord to Gare de Paris-Nord was not the proper way to do that. If you can't move an article to a title that's already occupied, you should follow the instructions at WP:RM. What you did is a cut-and-paste move. A quote from that page: "When a cut-and-paste move is done, the page history of an article or talk page can be split among two or more different pages. This is highly undesirable, because we need to keep the history with the content for copyright reasons." I reverted it, fortunately there haven't been many edits to it since your move. Markussep Talk 07:36, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OK sorry about that, but I do think it should be Gare de Paris-Nord as this is also what the french article is called. I also feel it is important to have the word Paris in the title otherwise it could be unclear as to which North station it is!

Any article that needs doing, as I am not sure what to write next?

Chris0693 (talk) 13:22, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just list it at WP:RM then. I think we should discuss the RER stations as well, at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject France. I don't mind having them all at "Gare de X", I do think it should be consistent. If we decide to move the rest, I'll change the {{RER stations}} template accordingly. About other articles, I think the railway lines in the Netherlands could use some attention. Markussep Talk 14:29, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Succesion Templates

[edit]

In the Netherlands railway station articles (and elsewhere) you seem to be struggling to understand the use of succession templates. You have created several unnecessary left and right templates, when the specific ones existed. See Category:Nederlandse Spoorwegen templates (don't forget to add a category to everything). The most recent example is at Enkhuizen railway station where the templates you inserted appear to create duplicate line information, when the previous ones were correct. Sw2nd (talk) 17:36, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I understand how they work its just that sometimes the direction the train goes isn't quite shown right on the S-line template, such as in Enkhuizen. I have spoken to other users and they agree trains coming from the west or north should be on the left and those coming from the east or south should be on the left. This is where the freedom of being able to enter the details comes in. Do you see what I am trying to say?

Chris0693 (talk) 13:22, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oh I agree that west is left and east is right, just like on a normal map. But to do it properly you need to change the direction of the existing left/right templates and then you must reverse every station affected. You don't just randomly change one station. If a line loops back on itself there are ways to reverse the direction using the "type" parameter, but except for the first section out of Amsterdam, everything generally runs north and east on that line. Sw2nd (talk) 17:39, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've fixed that line. Stations from Hoorn to Enkhuizen are the reverse of before. Starting from Amsterdam Centraal the line still runs left/west to Amsterdam Sloterdijk then again goes left to Hoorn. Hoorn also goes left/west to Amsterdam Sloterdijk. I think this is what you were trying to achieve. Sw2nd (talk) 18:36, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! How did you do that, that's exactly what I was after!
Chris0693 (talk) 18:08, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • First I changed the left/right templates so that there is an option to switch on the parameter {{{type}}} to enable reversal of the terminii on the line. I made up the name "reverse", it could have been anything. Then the s-line templates, where this applies, were changed by entering "reverse" under the type/type2 parameters (meaning left/right). I then also hid the duplicates of previous/next station information. You can view all of this by looking into my edits at the relevant templates and articles. Sw2nd (talk) 20:45, 8 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Here you go again

[edit]

There is no need for the new general templates you have recently created, because specific ones already exist for each line. Look into Oberhausen Hauptbahnhof and you will see s-line templates being used for both RE 5 and RB 35 toward Emmerich where you have used your own custom versions. Sw2nd (talk) 22:33, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Line information

[edit]

I have copied your table from Essen-Gerschede railway station detailing the route of line S9 (Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn) to that article. That table does not need to be entered in every station article because that information can be found by the link from the s-rail succession template to the S9 line article. You should update other line articles, which are missing this kind of information, rather than stuffing station articles. Sw2nd (talk) 16:48, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

HI, I'm afraid I think the article would be better if it did show the stations it called at, as this is more informative than the first, last and the next station in either direction. What is the problem with it being there? Chris0693 (talk) 20:35, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
By saying "the stations it called at", you are referring to the line and not information exclusive to the station. That should be in the line article, most of which are neglected, and need this kind of information added. Why would you not add it there? What if the route changes? Do you go through every station article and change them? By developing line articles you instantly make that information available to every station linked. A click from the station gets you there. Note also the DB station page I have added as a reference. The DB main page is not good for that purpose. Sw2nd (talk) 22:50, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How about creating a (preferably collapsible) template for the line, that you can use in the line article and in the station articles? That way, if something changes in reality, you only have to change it in one place. Markussep Talk 12:19, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That would mean that a larger station would be swamped with detailed information about the numerous lines that use that station, plus links (with multiples) to almost every other station in the country - and succesion templates as well. This might be valid for a metro or limited commuter service, but is total overkill for a normal mainline station. You would not enter such expanded details about the town where the station is located, you just link to it. Just as it is irrelevant to the station who the mayor of the town is, we don't need to show intimate line details, such as the locomotives used on every service that passes through. That is why there are separate articles about ralway lines (and towns). Those German lines need the work, rather than expending time and energy on adding the information they lack by overloading stations with chaff. Sw2nd (talk) 16:00, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • OK. I'll give up on the tables thing, but how about you don't include a link to nonexistant Commons Categories and don't link to railway company web pages that contain no information about the station. For DB stations you can link directly to a page about the station - and use it as a reference for your article. See Essen-Gerschede railway station for an example of how this can be done. You should probably also add back the table of line info, that I removed, to remain consistent. Just to finish up, please note that section header titles should not be capitalized, just like article names. I have also fixed up Duisburg-Ruhrort railway station to give you a second example. This meant to be assistance - but you don't see it that way. Sw2nd (talk) 17:54, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • OK, thank you! Well I just think the Commons Categories are good for if a photo gets added in the future? I'm fine with not linking to company pages - I could put them as an Extenal Link? - I just needed something as a reference. I have been doing that with Essen-Borbeck railway station too. Ok thanks for your help! Chris0693 (talk) 18:01, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox NS-station

[edit]

Hi Chris, I changed the {{Infobox NS-station}} into a wrapper for {{Infobox station}}. It has more or less the same functionality it had, but it looks like the other station infoboxes now. If you like you can check the Dutch railway station articles for missing information in the infoboxes, for instance the line(s) the station is on (see List of railway lines in the Netherlands for the names of the railway lines). And there's still a few stations without an article. Let me know if you need any help or explanation on the templates. Markussep Talk 14:42, 16 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

And another thing I started working on: the train service tables in the station articles. I've been experimenting with a better way to show the same information, see Old revision of Meerssen railway station. Could you comment on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Trains#Representation of service details in station articles? Markussep Talk 13:50, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Markussep, it all looks OK except I don't like the next/previous station template in the Infobox. Would you be able to put the new Infobox with the NL map in an article (possibly Aalten railway station as it is the first alphabetically) so that I can update the other pages please?
Thanks Chris0693 (talk) 09:59, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The Aalten article has the revised infobox and layout already, or do you mean something else? I've already done all stations in Limburg, Noord-Brabant, Gelderland and Zeeland. About the next/previous station templates, it's quite common to put those in the infobox. The only places where I haven't put them in the infobox are where there were many connections, e.g. Dordrecht and Arnhem, which would make the infobox excessively long. But that's a matter of taste really. I've used the (updated) Dutch railway services article for the services, let me know if you get stuck somewhere. Markussep Talk 08:21, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I suppose I will have to live with it. The only thing I would suggest be changed is where it is written in articles '2 hourly services to...' as this makes it seem as if there is only a train every 2 hours, maybe change it to 2x hourly or half hourly services to... Just a thought. Chris0693 (talk) 10:06, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see "half-hourly" is an existing word, we might use that instead. But to me (as non-native speaker I must add) "2 hourly services" can only mean 2 services every hour, I would expect a dash if it were to mean once every 2 hours. "bihourly" apparently also exists (but is it readily understood/used?), meaning once every 2 hours. Markussep Talk 10:42, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chris0693, Just wanted to let you know that I saw that you created the new article Wyhlen railway station--The content seems well-organized. However, I think the article seems to contain a few errors: the article currently does not contain any references. As a new article, the most important thing is to find reliable references for all existing information. Have a good day! Jipinghe (talk) 03:58, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Train service details

[edit]

Hi Chris, I saw you're adding train service details to station articles again, like for instance at Amsterdam Centraal railway station. There was a discussion about that earlier, which you may have missed. It's at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Trains/Archive: 2011, 2#Representation of service details in station articles. The conclusion was that it's better to put that information in a page like Dutch railway services, and link to that page from the succession templates. I created similar tables for France in the TER regional articles, I'm not sure whether something similar already exists for German railways. Markussep Talk 14:22, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mark, yes I just added it to Amsterdam Centraal and was going to ask you what you thought, but I suppose you didn't think it was much as it has been deleted. I don't think that showing all the stations is a good way to show the information, but I think it looks better in a table than just a line of writing, and what is shown on these pages lacks enough detail now. I don't know whats best to do now? Chris0693 (talk) 10:34, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Let me explain station articles again

[edit]

Take for example Rathmannsdorf railway station:-
Obvious things are the use of Capitals On Every Word In The Headings contrary to MOS and References which are external links rather than inline citations. In this case, since there is only one railway line and one route, the addition of line information is not obtrusive, but all of that should really be detailed in its own article. You obviously have an interest in or a knowledge about the train services, so why not share it? The type of equipment used is totally irrelevant to the station. If this was a major station it would be drowned with redundancy. On digging further into the article I find that none of those so called references mention the station at all and are only links to website homepages - totally useless. There is no Commons category at your link and none exists. Because you have a hole, you don't need to turn it into a rubbish dump. A very quick search returned a couple of entries that you could have used for proper references, including this History of the station in German. Finally here is a link to the official Deutsche Bahn page for Rathmannsdorf station, in English. I tried to help, but you would not listen, and that is why I gave up. Sw2nd (talk) 21:48, 16 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

While I would rather see you create articles about larger stations like Pirna, Bautzen and Riesa instead of these very small stations, I do have some practical advice on this particular article. There is an article about the railway service Pirna-Neustadt-Bad Schandau, see Saxon Switzerland Ring. You should move service details to that article, and link to it from this article (I just did that). Since we don't have an equivalent of the de:Liste der SPNV-Linien in Sachsen (yet?), that's also the article to link to from the succession template IMO. That's not hard to do, see what I did at Rathmannsdorf railway station and Template:RB-SN lines. Markussep Talk 11:00, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Markussep - You really didn't get the idea. There are dozens of station articles exactly like this. You have only partially fixed the one that I was using a an example. It is now no longer an example!!!!! Sw2nd (talk) 18:29, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I know there are hundreds of articles like this. That's why I'm using this as an example of how to improve it. If Chris wants to see what the difference is, he can look at the history or another station on the line, like Mittelndorf railway station. Actually, he just started working on them, see diff. Markussep Talk 19:23, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK - I'll do that. Sw2nd (talk) 19:50, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I 've seen that you added the lines for Leipzig Markt station and further stations. Please check at S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland, there are 6 lines altogether, which serve this station. S5X is something different than S5. Thus the template Template:S-line/MDSB left/S5 needs to be fixed, another template for S5X needs to be created (Unfortunately I didn't understand those very templates yet, so I couldn't do it.) Secondly I would prefer the same colours for the individual lines as to be seen at S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland. I don't really care which ones, but they should be the same. Nevertheless thanks for your efforts so far! Regards, Kleeblatt187 (talk) 16:14, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kleeblatt, I've added the S5X route, the templates are complex and took a while for me to get my head around too! I have given each line a colour (according to the network map), like is done for the lines on the Berlin S-Bahn. Let me know if you have suggestions! Chris0693 (talk) 19:42, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the templates! I have dared to change colours slightly, now they are they same as used at S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland. It seems to me that the colours being used there are the same as at DE-WP. I think we should keep things the same way, it's the same lines in real life anyway ;-). WikiProject assessment tags for talk pages

[edit]

Thank you for your recent articles, including Poznań–Piła railway, which I read with interest. When you create a new article, can you add the WikiProject assessment templates to the talk of that article? See the talk page of the article I mentioned for an example of what I mean. Usually it is very simple, you just add something like {{WikiProject Keyword}} to the article's talk, with keyword replaced by the associated WikiProject (ex. if it's a biography article, you would use WikiProject Biography; if it's a United States article, you would use WikiProject United States, and so on). You do not have to rate the article if you do not want to, others will do it eventually. Those templates are very useful, as they bring the articles to a WikiProject attention, and allow them to start tracking the articles through Wikipedia:Article alerts and other tools. For example, WikiProject Poland relies on such templates to generate listings such as Article Alerts, Popular Pages, Quality and Importance Matrix and the Cleanup Listing. Thanks to them, WikiProject members are more easily able to defend your work from deletion, or simply help try to improve it further. Feel free to ask me any questions if you'd like more information about using those talk page templates. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:49, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The article La Cave station has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Station does exist but I cannot verify its notability or find more information about this station. Would love to be proven wrong.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist.
