Citizendium

Regarding this, I agree the statement was poorly phrased. What it seems to be referring to, though, is a phenomenon I've often watched in disputes where an editor assumes good faith of one party by imputing bad faith to the other. If editors want to live by the spirit of WP:AGF then what they really ought to be doing is making their best effort to assume positive motivations of the people who aren't already in agreement with them. Sometimes disagreements are a matter of priorities or perspective. Does it make more sense to think of it that way? DurovaCharge! 06:32, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just to be crystal clear where I stand. When *I* approached Jimbo Wales to the effect of asking him to remove editing priviledges from someone, that *someone* was not a new editor much later arrived than myself, but a much more senior editor, in far better standing than myself (and he still continues to edit, to my great pleasure), and furthermore, in asking Jimbo to consider whether that editor should be barred from editing wikipedia, I made a specific stipulation that should Jimbo feel it useful, each and every word I used in the e-mail, was his to use as he saw fit, attributed to me, claimed as his own or whatever. None of it I claimed private or priviledged communication. This I think very much illustrates a highly divergent perspective from one you seem to have been blessed with. I'm afraid that's not very clear at all. I never used IRC, not on any channel. I did join a list called cyberstalking because - well - the name should be obvious. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. A lot of things have been said about me and attributed to me that I never actually said or did; it's like looking at a caricature of myself to read it. But if I'm unwelcome I won't bother you again. Well. Your first posting is amazingly vague, there above. And now you are referring to IRC and to cyberstalking, though I have not mentioned either. What are you really trying to say. I won't enter into shadow boxing matches, but I will not in anyway let anyone think that your and my situation are comparable. I may have decided to have not pressed issues where more forceful people might have done so. That does not make me somebody who has decided to be an onlooker, rather than an actor. Speedy deletion of Moleskin

Board elections 2008

Hi Cimon,

The 2008 board elections will be in a few months (1 to 14 June) and the election committee is looking for people willing to translate the election pages into various languages. I noticed that you seem to be interested in Meta translations en>fi. Would you be available and interested in translating the board election pages into Finnish? I'm looking for at least two people per language so no one translator feels overwhelmed, so they can mutually proofread each other and help each other out as needed, but if only one is available that is fine as well. (To get an idea of how much work is involved you can take a look at last year's election pages.)

If you are not available or are not interested, it would be nice if you could point me in the direction of users who might be interested in helping, or show them this message.

Hello Cimon,
It's very conscientious of you to think of possible neutrality issues when translating, and I completely understand. It can be odd to translate something you've helped along or helped organize; you wonder if you're as neutral as you think you are.
I recognize that there are not many fi:-speakers willing or available to translate (in fact, off the top of my head the only one I remembered was you). Do you have anyone else in mind, anyway, or none at all? I'll try to contact your suggested translators; if they cannot work on the elections I will leave a note at the fi: Village Pump. If no one responds, you can start work. Do you feel comfortable with that? We'll have exhausted the possibilities, I think.

Me and my mate were wondering if there is any way of taking over (becoming a bureaucrat) on this wiki: Data crystal , we are asking you because it has been inactive for a long time, and we were hoping to try and take over to help fix it up. Could you help me

I see that you are not only an administrator but also the user that created Newbies article. Im looking for help, and I have asked three other people and I have still not gotten a response. I have been trying to get an explanation regarding my situation. I was told that my usernames from yesterday were not allowed. I was told they were offensive, but no one told me what was so offensive about them. I felt they used some light hearted toilet humor, but not offensive. I went through an appeals process as described, and received no answer to my questions other than that if I continue I will be blocked. There was no answer why I would be blocked, just that if continue with my appeals I will be blocked for trolling. I didn't even know what trolling is until I read about it. Somehow I am being disruptive, but no one wants to tell me how. No one will give me explanations, just threats. This does not seem to be in accordance with the Newbies policy. I just want to understand. I also made a complaint about the username of someone, that I felt violated the username policy, and that was ignored. Once again no explanation. Also it is fairly clear that the oppose that you moved from the support section was meant as a joke support because it was initially put in the support section with an edit summary of "s++" [1] and the fact that it was intended as a support was backed up by the comment on my talkpage [2]. As the closing crat I am totally behind the fact that you have final say on how you assess supports and opposes, I just wanted to highlight these issues for you. Don't care. Polargeo is a sysop. If the !vote mattered—that is, it was the determining factor in closing the RfA as failed—I may care. But I try not to deal with hypothetical situations. I have been contemplating your recent renewed interest in WP:RFA for over a week. There has been ongoing discussion of the role of less active bureaucrats and the possible need for reconfirmation processes or some sort of inactivity policy.

You and I share a history of early involvement at ENWP. I note that you have been involved mainly in other projects (fi: if I'm not mistaken) in recent years, as those projects have flourished. While occasional and even lengthy periods of inactivity are to be expected of any Wikipedian of tenure, I am concerned that in the interest of maintaining a token level of activity you have chosen to be involved in a highly sensitive and visible part of the project without taking the time to reacquaint yourself with the community.

Hey, Cimon Avaro! I saw that you were a bureaucrat/administrator here, so I was just wondering if you might be able to answer a question I had. The thing is, I'm an admin on a different wiki, and another admin on the same wiki posted a question to the rest of the admins asking if there was a URL that can be used to show any user their current number of edits on the wiki. On our wiki, there's a page called Special:Editcount that conveys that information (I don't think Wikipedia has a page like this though), so another admin advised him to use this URL: http://_________.com/Special:Editcount/Username. That URL would achieve the desired result, but one would have to constantly put the username of the specific user at the end of the URL when posting it on that user's talk page, so my goal was to come up with a way to avoid that; almost to create something you could post on any user's talk page without changing any part of it and still get the desired result. I came up with this: {{fullurl:Special:Editcount/{{BASEPAGENAME}}}}, this way, one could just post the coding on the talk page of the desired user and the returned URL would automatically direct the user to their respective edit count. This worked successfully for every other user whose talk page I tested the coding on (without saving the page, of course); the only problem is that the user he wanted to do this for has an "*" both at the beginning and the end of their username (the second asterisk isn't a problem, just the first), meaning that instead of being returned as:

it gets returned as:

and doesn't take anyone anywhere, because it's just the raw coding. So I was just wondering if you knew of any way to circumvent this problem (aside from just telling him to post "http://_________.com/Special:Editcount/*User*" on the user's talk page, which isn't the end of the world, but is, of course, what I was trying to get around in the first place), maybe by putting some other form of coding that I'm not aware of somewhere in the existing coding or something. MSU Interview

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.


So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Hi Following the drama at BN, I'm trying to come up with a statement all Crats could agree to. Please take a look, below. I am quite content to do this onwiki -we have always worked transparently, except where secrecy is essential (ie RTV). I think we should be able to wordsmith a statement acceptable to all, and I think it's an important thing to do.

  1. In my opinion, this issue has come about through an unfortunate proliferation of documentation: policy, guideline, how-to etc
  2. I am not convinced that there is community consensus on all of the points encapsulated in those various pages
  3. I am unhappy at what may be described as some or all of: inconsistencies, inaccuracies or lack of clarity in that documentation
  4. I do not believe that any of the issues we have faced have been caused by Crats trying to widen their powers
  5. I would like to see the issues clarified, based on consensus, and for the documentation to be updated accordingly
  6. I'd like to thank Griot-de for generously withdrawing the rename request

An important message about renaming users

Dear Cimon Avaro,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

(Message to all bureaucrats)

There is an ongoing discussion about implementing some kind of standards for administrative and bureaucrat activity levels; and activity requirements for bureaucrats have been explored several times in the past. I've prepared a draft addition to Wikipedia:Bureaucrats that would require at least one bureaucratic action every five years to retain the bureaucrat permission.

In the past, I've been hesitant of such proposals but I believe that if the bureaucrat group as a whole is seen to be actively engaged, the community may be more willing to grant additional tasks to the position.

Please let me know your thoughts. I'm not sure if this actually applies to any of us, but if you have not acted as a bureaucrat in over five years, you might consider requesting removal of the permission or otherwise signalling that you intend to return to bureaucrat activity. –xenotalk 14:22, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

To assist with the implementation of this requirement, please see Wikipedia:Bureaucrat activity. Modeled after Wikipedia:Inactive administrators and similar to that process, the log page will be created on 1 September 2015. Bureaucrats who have not met the activity requirements as of that date will be notified by email (where possible) and on their talk page to advise of the pending removal.

If the notified user does not return to bureaucrat activity and the permissions are removed, they will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFB. Removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon the affected user in any way.

Extended confirmed protection

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Cimon Avaro.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

  • When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
  • Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
  • The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.
