Closing of the article, "Brennan Heningham"

You, sir, should be very much ashamed of yourself. To have closed an article, based on false "personal attacks", despite having the consent of the subject in question, is biased. You want biased? Fine, look at any political article on Wikipedia, and you'll see biased reporting. In fact, when I looked at the George Tiller page I saw what could only be liberal bias. Hypocrite. I'll let you know that I will keep at it, and you will never be able to stop me short of censoring me. I'll give you only trouble if you do not desist. This, sir, can be considered an ultimatum. Linking dates

Hi, I have not been actively linking unlinked dates. What I have been doing is copying infoboxes from French wikipedia (see for instance this diff), and years are often linked in French wikipedia. There has been quite some confusion about that recently (one user asking me to delink years, another user telling Ksnow not to delink years). If it's really a big deal, I can delink years in infoboxes I copy, but I would prefer some bot to do that. Markussep Talk 09:46, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Ottawa language References section

Hi, just wondering why you removed the {{Refbegin|3}} tag from this section. I'm not aware of any reason it would be deprecated, and having references in columns makes them a little tidier. Thanks. Jomeara421 (talk) 11:09, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Well, we can't use three or more ref columns because they break on some browsers. The problem I have with {{refbegin}} is that it makes the text smaller for no apparent reason, making it harder for those with vision difficulties to read. Dabomb87 (talk) 12:47, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
OK, I'm not going to worry about it but it's pretty common in FA articles, such as Irish phonology. I am aware it doesn't work on all browsers. Thanks for the cleanup on the other issues. Jomeara421 (talk) 13:14, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

All your comments at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of Dexter episodes/archive2 were solved a couple of days ago. Your banner here says you review the replies at your oppose votes. ???? Nergaal (talk) 23:00, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Those were only examples that the entire text needed copy-editing. There wasn't really anything that needed revisitng, since my oppose would have stood anyway. I might have reconsidered my oppose, but the comments/oppose from Truco and Rambo's Revenge confirmed my views. I wouldn't mind copy-editing, but I wouldn't be able to do so for another week and a half. Dabomb87 (talk) 23:03, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
That would be really nice! It is slightly annoying when the only thing remaining at a FAC or FLC is the prose, because that is sometimes not easily fixable when only a very small number of editors work on the article. Nergaal (talk) 23:20, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

You need to make a key for the abbreviated team names and baseball positions. Yes, they're linked, but this information is important enough that readers shouldn't have to click away from the article to find out. Dabomb87 (talk) 23:31, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Fantasy Black Channel FAC

Hi, are you any closer to doing a more comprehensive copyedit on the article? The most recent comments on the review page point out possible issues of redundancy, verb agreement and sentence flow particularly in the Erol Alkan section (para 3 and 4). I would appreciate the help since it's hard to copyedit your own work. Rafablu88 (talk) 10:40, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

Hey, I'm planning to change a couple of edits if that's ok. I've used "has stated"/"have stated" in the article and want to keep verb uniformity. Also, Giants2008 complained about -ing verb use. Might readd "and" in a sentence. Rafablu88 (talk) 15:26, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Dilemma

About Akureyri, it sounds like you are going to remove GA status in 2 days. I am debating whether to work on it. I am not a hostile person who fights. So I will not go through the legal type appeals. I am a positive person so article improvement is my solution. However, it is impossible for me to work on it in 2 days. I was starting to work on references but why bother? The reference fixes are mostly for GA as they don't help the reader understand the material better. This GA mess seems discouraging.

Would you consider keeping the reconsideration open as long as there is continual improvement with at least one editor working on it constantly? The alternative would be to give up for the moment and work on something else.

The other possibility is to have GA and FA last only 1 year and need reconfirmation. Then there will not be the stigma or discouragement of having status yanked. However, automatic expiration would require a policy change. User F203 (talk) 14:45, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

This arbitration case has now closed. The final decision may be reviewed on the case page. A synopsis of the final decision is provided below.

Notes: (1) for "topic banned", read "banned from style and editing guidelines, and any related discussions"; (2) an "editing restriction" is a prohibition from reverting any changes which are principally stylistic, except where all style elements are prescribed in the applicable style guideline.

List review

I need to ask your advice about some of the comments a reviewer is making. Crazycheetah has asked for some changes that could and possibly should be applied across other MOH lists as well but before I do that I wanted to run them by you first.

  1. Change the section header for List of recipients to just Recipients.
  2. Remove the see also section because the List of Medal of Honor recipients link is already in the nav template.
  3. Change the table to be 99% width due to the scroll bar problem.
  4. Add a note about the quotes and comments in the notes section.

My question is should I go ahead and make these changes to the other lists as well? Thanks--Kumioko (talk) 02:35, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

I'm new

Hi Dabomb87,

I'm new to Wikipedia—as an editor—and I'm finding getting started a lot more difficult than I anticipated.

  • It's not clear from the beginning that one should not type four tildes when editing an article, only when commenting in a talk page. Wikipedia needs to make it clearer to us newbies that an electronic signature and time stamp are automatically generated when an edit is saved. Too much attention is paid to signing posts with the signature/time stamp toolbar button or four tildes for both a signature and time stamp or three tildes for just a signature or five tildes for just a time stamp, for the automatic signing/time stamping of edits to barely be mentioned (is it mentioned?).
  • How do I create a user page? For example, how did you put colored boxes at the top of your page? How does the outline box appear? (Oh...."A Table of Contents will automatically be generated when four headings are added to an article" appears in tiny type under Section headings in the Wikipedia Cheatsheet; is this the only place it's mentioned?) How does one change font sizes? Are headings the only content that can change size?
  • I'm confused by these edit and talk page boxes; they are apparently the only places to communicate in Wikipedia, but....
CliffC pointed out that I shouldn't sign my edits. I wanted to thank him, so I hit Talk next to his name and went to his user page. It says, "Leave me a message at the bottom." When I scrolled to the bottom, his page ends with the latest post. What do I do then?
  • Oh, no, I'm confused by the Edit button at the right-hand side of both articles and posts. Is that how one gets into a discussion? Clicking it will bring up another talk page box with the entire conversation, and you simply scroll to the bottom, indent if desired, and add your comment?
  • And, as on CliffC's user page, when I'll want to start a new topic (thanking him), I'll have to format my comment with a new heading (the subject of my comment) and underline it? No, as at the top of this page, apparently a "new section" will start automatically. Oh, I think I'm getting it....

Thanks, WR1T —Preceding unsigned comment added by WriteRight1stTime (talkcontribs) 19:44, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Oops, indent, not bullet!--WR1T (talk) 19:49, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
Hi. Editing Wikipedia as a newly registered editor can be complicated, contrary to what some might tell you. The most important thing to remember is that anything you can improve is an improvement for Wikipedia. Don't worry about "breaking" rules, just be bold and edit. If you make a mistake, other editors can always fix it or undo the edit, which is a great thing about Wikipedia (but can also be a bad thing). Now, to answer your specific questions:
  • "It's not clear from the beginning..." You make a good point. If you have a suggestion on how Wikipedia can improve its help guides, please do so at Help talk:Contents.
  • "How do I create a user page? "See Wikipedia:User page for guidelines on making a user page. I suggest starting simple; don't worry about adding "colored boxes" or fancy designs. Just write a paragraph or two describing yourself, your interests, and what you want to do on wikipedia. Userboxes are a great way to describe yourself. Generally, you should use the default font size in articles, but you can use HTML tags such as <big>big text</big> and <small>small text</small>. For italics and bold, use special wikimarkup: ''Two apostrophes around a word/phrase for italics'', and '''three apostrophes for bold'''.
  • "I'm confused by these edit and talk page boxes..." There are two ways of adding new sections to a talk page:
    1. At the top of all talk pages, there is a "new section" tab. Click it, and you can enter the section title in one box and comment in the other; the post will be automatically placed at the bottom.
    2. Click the [edit] button of the lowest posted section. In the edit screen, add a level two header (==Section title==) below the already-present text, and add your comment below the section title.
  • It is possible to edit the entire discussion. However, it usually takes a longer time to load the page.
  • Yep. The "underline" appears automatically when you add level-two headers (two equal signs, section title, two equal signs).

SPoTY FLC

Hi, I notice you've asked Giants2008 for his opinions on the 3 options I mentioned. However, I have recently found out that (according to the MOS) a change might not be necessary. Could you take a look please. Thanks, Rambo's Revenge (talk) 14:12, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Okay someone came back saying that the abbreviations are okay, but the large number of flags is decorative so their use is not appropriate. Do you share this view, and if so what is your preference for how to replace them? Also, if you have a different/better idea please say? Thanks, Rambo's Revenge (talk) 10:11, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Script

Hey Dabomb - I saw you ran a script over my Turner Prize FLC to convert ISO dates to readable versions. Can you let me know how to get that script working for me? Also, I'd be interested in a script that could replace hyphens with en-dashes when used in scorelines (e.g. in football, tennis etc articles) - any ideas? All the best. Perhaps, but better to discuss or at least use an edit summary. WP:ARBDATE, which just concluded, resulted in several editors' being topic banned from MOS over things over removing and adding dispute tags, so be careful. By the way, thanks for your opinions at this discussion. The consensus on the issue could affect many featured lists. Dabomb87 (talk) 22:28, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Seriously, dude, what is the problem? What's so hard to understand "congrats; GA pass"? I wouldn't leave "congrats" in my edit summary, unless I'm saying that I've promoted an article, which would have either "GA1" in the mix or I'm congratulating another user for an accomplishment of some sort. "Fix" to wind toolbox

That fix by adding a slant within the disambig link, for some reason, points away from the disambig function of the toolbox and produces an error message. This happened within the past few days, and it took us a while to figure out what had happenned. Thegreatdr (talk) 02:05, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

I apologize for the odd way I submitted this List so don't beat me up too bad. I usually don't submit lists that I have edited so few times but this is an important one that I think deserves to be back on the FL status and I think it looks good other than some cosmetic changes I would like to make. I also usuallly don't do this either but I left some comments related to a couple of things I would like to do to restructure the look of this list. Hi, Dabomb. Do you think we should split this into several lists for each category (e.g. coaches)? I have this idea because the current list is very lengthy and will continues to grow every year. However, I worry that the split will cause problems regarding to 3b. Also the team category has only 6 items and I am not sure if it should be a stand-alone list. These are potentially big issues and I don't want to do anything without discussing with you first.—Chris! ct 22:51, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

We might make it so that we have a main article and then sublists, a la List of United States Military Academy alumni and its sublists. Dabomb87 (talk) 22:52, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
That works. And we might not even need a main article if we can bring Basketball Hall of Fame up to GA.—Chris! ct 23:03, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Maybe List of members of the Basketball Hall of Fame can remain as main article and split coaches, players and contributers out of it. Entries under teams and referees can remain in the main one, so that the list can still be long enough to become a FL. Since you seem to agree with me per above, I will go ahead and do it within the hour.—Chris! ct 01:35, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

One more thing. Should the main list contains several coaches, players or contributors like the Navy Academy alumni list or just links to those sublists?—Chris! ct 01:40, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
The main list should definitely contain some of each. I don't know how we would decide which ones belong the main list, and which should be split off. I'll look at other FLs. Dabomb87 (talk) 01:42, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
I split it since I got nothing to do. I just leave {{main|article name}} at the main article for now. We change that later.—Chris! ct 06:40, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
List of members of the Basketball Hall of Fame (head coaches) is almost ready for FLC. Could you take a look?—Chris! ct 02:06, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

List Question

Just a quick follow-up on this post. If I am reading this correctly, then I could have used a "General Reference" for the Poker Hall of Fame wherein there is a list of every member along with a short bio. I could not have used a "General Reference" for the 2008 WSOP where each event has it's own reference. This would even be the case if there was page that listed all of the 2008 winners and provided a link to the other people who made the final tables. Is this correct?---Balloonman NO! I'm Spartacus! 02:34, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

You say you're "doing" this since 24th June... I was just wondering if you had actively reviewed it yet as I have also been asked to take a look at it and it would be silly if we both pointed out the same stuff. Just didn't want to waste time... The Rambling Man (talk) 15:26, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

GA

I'm not asking you to look at any article now. However, would it be ok for a GA to remain a GA if it complies with the standard GA checklist and has the same categories as other city GA's? I'm not trying to make it comply with FA standards and hope that FA criteria won't be used to remove GA status.

I still have unfinished work so the article I'm working on is not finished. Thanks for your help and understanding. User F203 (talk) 16:43, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

Re:Poker

I think the problem is the {{nts}} template, and it doesn't work with one zero. It would probably be best to switch to {{sort}}. -- Scorpion0422 03:55, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

OK. Dabomb87 (talk) 03:57, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
On second look, it might be a bug with the tables and not the template. If you press the sort icon several times, it eventually starts to sort correctly. -- Scorpion0422 03:58, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Question about FL list formats

At my recent FLC for List of Donkey Kong games (the nomination is here), someone suggested that the format of the list should be taken out of a table format. I was hoping for your opinion on the matter -- I'm not sure how I'd list game releases on seven different consoles in prose. My problem with converting the list per the suggestion is that almost every other video game FL follows that same format, and I don't want to go blazing a new trail before I hear from other people. -- Nomader (Talk) 04:45, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I am wondering if you could do a prose check for me. This is not urgent at all, so don't feel pressured. There are several things I want to improve on references before even attempting FLC. Thanks—Chris! ct 21:14, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

Can you go through one more time?—Chris! ct 05:16, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

You know what is up with that? I haven't heard anything about it, so I don't know whats going on with it. Whammies Were Here 12:48, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi. Would you consider the above an outline? It's a well done list, but it seems to be little more than a well-written lead and a list of links. Let me know what you think, or comment at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of skin-related conditions/archive1. Cheers, Dabomb87 (talk) 01:14, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Gross!
Well, it's 2-levels deep (2 levels below the title). That qualifies as an outline. Though as a branch of OOK, it skips a couple intermediary branches (that is, they're missing): Outline of dermatology, which in turn is a branch of Outline of skin (but dermatology is also a branch of Outline of medicine, which we do have).
By the way, why is it called "skin-related conditions" and not "skin conditions"?

Re: List of Big Brother (U.S.) HouseGuests

Thanks for the feedback! I realize article authors are to make changes, and not reviewers, but I wasn't exactly sure which images needed to be removed, if any. If you can help, it would be appreciated. I couldn't find any other images to replace the ones in question, which is unfortunate since the images make the list look nicer.
